Sunflower Power Crochet Coasters with Twelve Petals

· admin

Sunflower Coasters finished crochet project

Sunflower Power crochet coasters have a thick circular center and twelve open, chain-framed yellow petals. Super bulky blanket yarn and a large hook give the source sample an approximately twenty-centimeter diameter. The center takes four simple rounds, then the petals are worked around its twenty-four stitches.

Materials

Super bulky blanket yarn: about 10 yd / 9 m for the center and 15 yd / 14 m for the petals; 9 mm hook, marker, scissors and yarn needle. The source uses Bernat Blanket in Coal or Aqua Sparkle with Sunsoaked petals.

Check the center size first

The source gauge checkpoint is the completed four-round center: approximately 11.5 cm across. Make that small circle before judging the full size. A much smaller center will create a smaller coaster even if you use the same petal count. A loose center can also let the soft blanket yarn stretch around the cup.

Use US terms. Sc is single crochet, tr is treble crochet, sl st is slip stitch and inc means two stitches into one stitch. Starting chain 1 does not count as a stitch in these center rounds. Join each round rather than making a continuous spiral.

Make the circular center

Round Work Count
1 Make a magic ring, or the source’s chain-three ring. Work 6 sc and join. 6
2 Chain 1, increase in every stitch and join. 12
3 Chain 1, increase in every stitch and join. 24
4 Chain 1, sc in each stitch and join. 24

The increase from twelve straight to twenty-four is intentional. Do not replace round 3 with the more usual eighteen-stitch amigurumi round. The following plain round stabilizes the center before the yellow petal section. Change color at the join so the new yarn begins cleanly.

Learn the two-treble cluster

A two-treble cluster combines two incomplete treble crochets in the same stitch. Yarn over twice and begin the first tr, leaving its last loop unfinished on the hook. Work a second unfinished tr into the same anchor. There should now be three loops; yarn over and draw through all three. The two tall stitches meet at one top.

Keep the cluster loops at a consistent height. Pulling the first treble much tighter than the second makes the petal lean. It helps to practice one cluster on a spare loop before starting the full outer round in thick yarn.

Work the twelve-petal edge

With yellow, chain 4. Skip the joining stitch, work a two-tr cluster into the next stitch, chain 4 and slip stitch into the next stitch. Continue the same petal unit around the center, alternating a cluster anchor with a slip-stitch anchor. The final petal returns to the first anchor, giving twelve petals across the twenty-four-stitch center.

Count the petals before fastening off. Twelve evenly spaced chain arches should surround the center with no empty section at the join. If the last petal does not fit, check the first skipped stitch and make sure a joining slip stitch was not counted as a twenty-fifth center stitch.

Weave in and shape

Use the blunt needle to weave the tails through the back of several dense stitches. Soft blanket yarn can be slippery, so turn the tail back through a different route before trimming. Keep the center flat and ease the twelve petals into a balanced circle. Do not stretch the chain arches hard enough to distort the center.

Color and yarn variations

A dark center gives the traditional sunflower appearance; the source also shows an aqua center for a different color scheme. Keep the same center and petal construction for both versions. The source permits three strands of medium-weight yarn held together as a substitute for the super bulky yarn, with approximately three times the yardage. That is a strand-count substitution, not a guarantee of identical size.

Follow the care instructions for the chosen fiber and dry the finished piece flat. The design is presented as a coaster. Blanket yarn is not automatically suitable for contact with hot pots or pans, so do not treat the thick fabric as proof of heat resistance.

Frequently asked questions

Why are there twelve petals?

The petal round alternates cluster anchors and slip-stitch anchors over a twenty-four-stitch center.

Can I use three strands of medium yarn?

The source gives that option. Budget roughly three times the yarn length and check the four-round center against the 11.5 cm checkpoint.

Does the starting chain count?

The center rounds use a starting chain 1 that does not count as an extra stitch.
