Crochet Striped Bellflower Pattern with Seven Shaped Petals

· admin

This crochet striped bellflower pattern begins as a shaped strip, then joins into a flared bell. Seven repeats create its scalloped opening, while orange rows separate the white petal areas. A tapered receptacle closes the narrow end and three red pearl stamens sit inside the flower. It is the Bellflower A design from the supplied book, with a different construction from the earlier bluebell cups.

Materials

  • Cotton No. 8 in white and soft orange.
  • A 1.90 mm crochet hook; use the millimeter size rather than a regional letter label.
  • 0.8 mm wire for the flower stem and 0.3 mm wire for the stamens.
  • Green floral tape, scissors, a yarn needle and wire cutters.
  • Three red pearls or matching beads.

The source does not specify a numerical gauge, yarn quantity or finished flower diameter. Keep the same thread and tension across matching parts; changing thread size changes the finished dimensions.

Stitches and Pattern Notes

US crochet terms are used throughout. Ch = chain, sl st = slip stitch, sc = single crochet, hdc = half double crochet, dc = double crochet, tr = treble crochet. An increase places two stitches in one stitch; a decrease combines stitches. The source legend uses the words “2 stitches together” for an increase into one stitch. Those increases are written here as 2 sc or 2 dc in the same stitch. A cluster, when specified, is closed together. Crab stitch is reverse single crochet. Although the source labels the strip instructions as rounds, they are passes across the petal strip before its ends are joined. Follow the arrows on the chart. The final group in the shaping pass is a 3-tr cluster in one stitch, closed together; it is not three complete trebles spread over three stitches.

Work the Seven-Repeat Flower Strip

Round / stepInstructions
Foundation and pass 1With soft orange, ch 13. Starting in the second chain from the hook, work 12 sc across.
Pass 2Change to white. Work 5 sc, 3 dc, 3 tr and a 3-tr cluster in the final base stitch. There are twelve base positions across the pass.
Pass 3With white, work 12 sc across, following the charted return direction.
Pass 4With soft orange, work 12 sc across.
Pass 5With soft orange, work 12 sl st across.
Remaining repeatsRepeat passes 2-5 until seven petal repeats have been completed in total. Join the first and last strip edges with sl st and fasten off.

For the 3-tr cluster, work three unfinished tr into the same final stitch, retaining their final loops on the hook. Yarn over and draw through the remaining loops together. This raises the outer petal edge while keeping one cluster top. The progression from sc to dc to tr gives the petal its slope; using twelve equal-height stitches would remove that shaping.

The source chart shows the direction changes and starting marks. Maintain the twelve stitch positions as you return across the strip; turning or joining chains are not additional petal stitches. Check the seven repeat sections before closing the seam so the bell does not acquire an extra scallop.

Taper the Narrow End

Round / stepInstructions
1With soft orange, distribute 15 sc around the bottom edge of the joined flower.
2Sc in all fifteen stitches.
3Repeat (2 sc, skip 1 stitch) around. This leaves ten worked sc.
4Repeat (1 sc, skip 1 stitch) around. This leaves five worked sc.
5Bring the remaining opening together with a sl st as shown in the source. Fasten off.

These two tapering rounds use skipped stitches, not sc2tog decreases. Keep that distinction when reading the instructions. Position the seam behind the flower and let the narrow end gather without pulling the flared upper edge into a tube.

Make Three Beaded Stamens

  1. Pass a piece of 0.3 mm wire through one red pearl and fold it so the bead sits at the top. Twist the two wire ends together below the bead.
  2. Make three of these stamens and twist their lower wire ends into a small group.
  3. Insert the 0.8 mm stem wire through the bottom of the receptacle and bend or twist it as shown in the assembly drawing.
  4. Place the three stamens inside the bell, with their beads visible above the center. Join their wires to the stem and cover the assembled wire with green floral tape.

Questions About the Striped Bellflower

Do I make seven separate petals?

No. Seven shaped repeats are worked into one strip, then its ends are joined. The seam makes the strip into a continuous bell.

Does the following lily illustration belong to this flower?

The supplied PDF contains a misplaced lily finishing page between this design and its chart. The bellflower assembly uses the three-pearl drawings labeled for the bell; the unrelated lily bead decoration is not part of these instructions.
