Crochet Poppy Pattern in Three Sizes with a Shaped Green Leaf
· admin
This crochet poppy pattern uses shared starting rounds and different final-round stitch heights to create three sizes. Each bloom has a separate black center and a green leaf with pointed edges. The source calls the project advanced and gives approximate widths of 5 cm, 6 cm and 7 cm. Make one poppy first to see how the shaping behaves with your own yarn.

Materials for the Crochet Poppy Pattern
- DK yarn in red, black and green. The source lists a 50 g ball of each color and reports making 27 mixed poppies from its red ball; this is not a per-flower requirement.
- A 3.5 mm crochet hook, scissors and a yarn needle.
- An optional brooch pin if you are making a wearable poppy.
Before you begin
The original is written in UK terminology. This article converts the stitch names to US: UK dc becomes US sc, UK htr becomes US hdc and UK tr becomes US dc. Use ch for chain, sl st for slip stitch and a magic ring to begin. The source gauge is 21 UK dc and 22 rows over 10 cm; in US terms that is 21 sc and 22 rows over 10 cm.
Rounds shared by all three sizes
| Round / row | Instructions | Count |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Make a magic ring, work 10 sc into it, tighten the ring and slip stitch to the first sc. | 10 |
| 2 | Repeat twice: ch 1, 1 sc in the next stitch, 2 dc in the next stitch, 3 dc in each of the next two stitches, ch 1, then slip stitch in the next stitch. Do not include the chain stitches in the stitch count. | 20 |

Choose the final round
| Version | US instructions | Count |
|---|---|---|
| Small, about 5 cm | Repeat twice: 3 sc in each of the next two stitches, 2 sc in each of the next five stitches, 3 sc in the next stitch, then 1 sl st in each of the next two stitches. Fasten off. | 42 |
| Medium, about 6 cm | Repeat twice: 3 hdc in each of the next two stitches, 2 hdc in each of the next five stitches, 3 hdc in the next stitch, then 1 sl st in each of the next two stitches. Fasten off. | 42 |
| Large, about 7 cm | Repeat twice: 3 dc in each of the next two stitches, 2 dc in each of the next five stitches, 3 dc in the next stitch, then 1 sl st in each of the next two stitches. Fasten off. | 42 |
Make a black center
Work the selected number of sc into a magic ring: 6 for a small center, 8 for a medium center or 10 for a large center. Tighten the ring, join with a slip stitch and leave a tail for attaching the center. Sew the black circle onto the middle of the red flower.
Crochet the green leaf
- Ch 7. Begin in the third chain from the hook and work 1 dc, 1 hdc, 2 sc and 1 sl st along the chain. In the end chain space, work (sl st, ch 1, sl st).
- Continue around the opposite side with 2 sl st and 2 sc.
- Make the first point: ch 2, slip stitch back down the chain beginning in the second chain from the hook, then slip stitch into the base of the sc. Continue with 1 sc along the edge.
- Make a second ch-2 point in the same way. Continue with 1 sc.
- Make a longer point: ch 3, work 2 sl st back down that chain beginning in the second chain from the hook, then slip stitch into the base of the sc. Continue with 1 sc.
- Make one more ch-2 point, slip stitch back toward the starting tail and fasten off.

Finish a poppy or a garland
Sew the leaf securely behind the flower so part of it remains visible. For a brooch, stitch the pin onto the back. For a garland, crochet a chain to the length you need and attach the finished poppies along it. Keep the sewing on the back of the petals and check that the black center remains centered.
Questions before you finish
Why do all sizes finish with 42 stitches?
The last-round stitch count is shared. The use of sc, hdc or dc changes the height and spread of that round.
What are the source’s conditions for selling finished poppies?
The source permits finished poppies to be sold only when the profits are donated to the British Legion Poppy Appeal. That condition is distinct from permission to republish the written pattern.
