Crochet Orange Bellflower Pattern with Five Pointed Petals

· admin

This crochet orange bellflower pattern builds a tubular cup before adding five pointed petals around its opening. The petals are formed from chain spines, widened with several stitch heights and finished with a mixed sc and slip-stitch edge. Three red bead stamens complete the flower. This is the book’s Bellflower B design, separate from the striped seven-repeat Bellflower A.

Materials

  • Cotton No. 8 in orange.
  • A 1.90 mm crochet hook; use the millimeter size rather than a regional letter label.
  • 0.8 mm wire for the support stem and 0.3 mm wire for the stamens.
  • Green floral tape, scissors, a yarn needle and wire cutters.
  • Three red pearls or matching beads.

The source does not specify a numerical gauge, yarn quantity or finished flower diameter. Keep the same thread and tension across matching parts; changing thread size changes the finished dimensions.

Stitches and Pattern Notes

US crochet terms are used throughout. Ch = chain, sl st = slip stitch, sc = single crochet, hdc = half double crochet, dc = double crochet, tr = treble crochet. An increase places two stitches in one stitch; a decrease combines stitches. The source legend uses the words “2 stitches together” for an increase into one stitch. Those increases are written here as 2 sc or 2 dc in the same stitch. A cluster, when specified, is closed together. Crab stitch is reverse single crochet. The source is chart-led at the petal joins. Keep the original chart open for Rounds 15-17, where the petal spines and shared attachment points meet the cup. The book rates this design four stars out of five.

Crochet the Bellflower Cup

Round / stepInstructions
FoundationCh 5 and join into a ring.
1Ch 1 and work 2 sc in each foundation chain. (10)
2Sc around. (10)
3Repeat (2 sc in one stitch, 1 sc) five times. (15)
4-9Sc around for six rounds. (15 in each round)
10Repeat (2 sc in one stitch, 2 sc) five times. (20)
11-14Sc around for four rounds. (20 in each round) Join with a sl st at the end of Round 14.

Count the straight rounds carefully: there are six fifteen-stitch rounds before the second increase and four twenty-stitch rounds afterward. The cup gives the flower its depth, so do not shorten it into a flat circle before adding the petal spines.

Round 15: Make Five Petal Spines

Ch 10 and work 9 sc back along the chain, starting in the second chain from the hook. Continue with 4 sc along the cup. Repeat that chain-and-return unit and four-sc advance for the next three petals. Make the fifth chain-and-return unit, then the final 2 sc shown at the round closure.

The written line uses four advances of four sc and a final two-sc advance. The chart shows the shared beginning and closing attachments; it does not mean the twenty-stitch cup is reduced to eighteen stitches. Use the chart for the join placement and do not add uncharted chains to make the final attachment.

Rounds 16-17: Shape the Pointed Petals

Round / stepInstructions
16Beginning at the first sc of a petal, work 3 tr, 3 dc, 6 sc, 3 dc and 3 tr around its spine. At the base, skip 1 stitch, sc in the next and skip 1 stitch. Repeat around the five petals.
17For each petal, work 6 sc, 6 sl st and 6 sc, then work 1 sc attached to the penultimate receptacle stitch indicated by the chart. Repeat around and fasten off.

The petal return in Round 16 has eighteen stitches around a nine-stitch spine. Its six central sc shape the tip area between the taller stitch groups. The following round keeps the six slip stitches near that tip while sc define the sides. Read “penultimate” as the charted attachment near the petal base, not as an instruction to crochet a new receptacle round.

Prepare and Attach the Stamens

  1. Thread one red pearl onto 0.3 mm wire, fold the wire and twist its ends below the pearl. Make three matching stamens.
  2. Twist the lower parts of the three stamen wires together, leaving their pearls separated enough to remain visible.
  3. Insert 0.8 mm wire through the back of the flower, moving from the receptacle center toward the edge of a petal base as illustrated. Bend it and twist the ends.
  4. Place the beaded group inside the flower cup. Join its lower wires to the support stem, then cover the stem with green floral tape.

Questions About Bellflower B

Can I replace the final edge with an ordinary sc round?

That changes the shaping. The supplied edge alternates sc with six slip stitches near each tip and includes a charted base attachment.

Is this the miniature bluebell pattern?

No. This flower uses a fourteen-round cup that grows to twenty stitches and has five separately widened petal spines. The miniature bluebell has a different small sc cup and pointed rim.
