Crochet Flower Garland with Three Motif Sizes

· admin

Three-Size Flower Garland finished crochet project

This crochet flower garland combines three sizes of flat flower along one chain. Each size begins with a different center count, so the finished motifs have five, six or eight petals. The source makes nine flowers of each size—three in each of three colors—for twenty-seven flowers altogether.

Materials

4-ply cotton or crochet thread in three colors, 3 mm hook, scissors and tapestry needle. The source sample uses DMC Natura Just Cotton, 50 g / 155 m, in Avessac 17, Jade 20 and Eucalyptus 8.

Choose a color and size sequence

Arrange a repeating sequence before making the whole set. Alternating a large flower with a small and medium one gives the chain an even rhythm, but the source leaves the order and final chain length open. Make one of every size first so you can compare their dimensions in your chosen yarn.

Flower Center sc Chain-two spaces / petals Quantity
Large 16 8 9
Medium 12 6 9
Small 10 5 9

Use US names throughout: hdc is half double crochet and tr is treble crochet. The source includes some inconsistent starting-chain and joining labels. On the first sc round, join into the first sc, rather than into a nonexistent chain-three top. For the treble round, the source begins the large motif with chain 4 and the smaller motifs with chain 3; retain the actual tr stitches and spaces when counting.

Large eight-petal flower

  1. Chain 5 and slip stitch into the first chain for a ring. Chain 1 and make 16 sc in the ring. Join to the first sc.
  2. Make a treble framework with a chain-two space after every second tr. The starting chain 4 substitutes for the first tr. Complete sixteen tr positions and eight chain-two spaces, then join.
  3. In each chain-two space, work hdc, five tr and hdc. Between petals, work sc in the gap between the neighboring tr stitches of the framework. Finish all eight petals and join neatly.

The printed large-petal sequence is written as hdc, 2 tr, 1 tr, 2 tr, hdc. That totals five tr between the two hdc. It is retained here as printed rather than silently changed to a different stitch height.

Medium and small flowers

For the medium size, use a chain-five ring and 12 sc in the center. The next round has twelve tr positions with a chain-two space after every second tr, creating six spaces. The final petal in each space is (hdc, 3 tr, hdc), with a single crochet between neighboring petals.

For the small size, use a chain-four ring and 10 sc. Work the same alternating treble-and-space framework to create five chain-two spaces. Fill each with (hdc, 3 tr, hdc), anchoring with sc between petals. Count five petals before fastening off.

The source’s general photo caption mentions five petals, but that description applies to the small version. Do not reduce the large and medium centers to five petals; their sixteen- and twelve-stitch frameworks create eight and six respectively.

Make twenty-seven motifs

Crochet three flowers of each color in each size. Keep finished motifs in three size groups while weaving in their ends, then lay out the complete chain sequence. If you change yarn weights, group flowers by their actual dimensions rather than assuming a named small flower will always be smaller than a medium one in a much finer yarn.

Shape the petals by hand and use only the blocking method recommended for the fiber. The open framework should remain visible between the center and the rounded petal edges. A hard press can flatten the small stitches that separate neighboring petals.

Thread the crochet chain

Work a chain to the desired length and pass it through the centers of the flowers as shown in the source. Spread the motifs before securing the ends, allowing a little chain between them so the flowers can face forward. The chapter does not give a fixed finished garland length or one required distance between flowers.

Hang the chain temporarily and check whether any motifs rotate. A discreet matching tack at the back of a flower is a possible finishing adjustment if you want a fixed display arrangement. Keep a note that this is your own assembly variation. The source also suggests mounting a single motif on a pin back to make a corsage.

Frequently asked questions

How many flowers are in the garland?

Twenty-seven in the source version: nine large, nine medium and nine small.

Do all sizes have five petals?

No. The center counts produce eight large petals, six medium petals and five small petals.

Is there a fixed chain length?

No. The source asks for a chain of the desired length, with the flowers threaded through their centers.
