Crochet Flower Barefoot Sandals for Baby Photos

Flower Barefoot Sandals original crochet project

These crochet flower barefoot sandals decorate the top of the foot without making a sole. A small triangular frame carries a five-petal flower, a toe loop and two long chain ties. The source uses the same basic construction in different yarn weights for baby and toddler versions. Treat the tied design as a supervised photo accessory.

Materials and gauge

Fingering cotton/thread for baby or worsted yarn for the source toddler variation, matching hooks, two colors, needle and scissors. Source samples use Knit Picks Comfy yarn.

Choose the source version

The baby flower is about one and a half inches across using fingering yarn or thread with a 2.75 mm hook. The toddler flower is about two inches using worsted yarn and a 3.25 mm hook. Those are flower dimensions, not foot lengths or a full fit guarantee. Make one base and check its position before completing the second sandal.

US terms are used. The source starts rounds with chains that it says do not count, yet joins some rounds into those starting chains. Mark the first actual sc as well as the join so the decorative chain does not become an extra base stitch.

Make the small frame

Chain 4 and close into a ring. Chain 1 and work 9 sc into the ring. The next round uses back loops only, leaving the front loops available for the flower. Work two corner groups of (2 dc, chain 2, 2 dc), separated by two ordinary dc. The third corner forms the toe loop instead of a short chain-two corner.

For that toe-loop corner, work 2 dc, chain 11, slip stitch into the tenth chain from the hook, chain 1 and return with 2 dc into the same base stitch. Complete the remaining side dc and join as shown in the original diagram. Keep the long loop clear of the short corner spaces before adding the ties.

Add two ties

Slip stitch into the first short corner and chain 60 for the first tie. Fasten off. Attach the second tie in the corresponding opposite short corner and chain 60 again. The source calls one of those attachment gaps a chain-three space, although the frame lists chain-two corners. Use the pictured short corner opposite the first tie; do not accidentally attach it to the toe loop.

Compare both ties before fastening the final tails. Chain tension affects their length considerably, so matching the physical length is more useful than relying only on the sixty-chain number. The optional small knots at their ends are decorative.

Work the flower on the free loops

Join the petal color into a free front loop of the original nine-sc ring. A petal is chain 2, five dc, chain 2 and a slip stitch into the same loop. Skip the next loop and repeat around. The source calls for five petals over an odd nine-stitch ring; its final spacing is not an evenly divisible two-stitch repeat. Use the pictured final anchor near the join rather than adding an extra center stitch and changing the frame.

Fold a corner of the frame backward while working to expose the free front loops. Keep every petal on the face of the sandal so a corner does not twist through the flower. Weave the petal tail into the back of its own stitches.

Fill the center and finish the pair

Rejoin the base color from the back. Surface-slip-stitch around the petal bases, then add short crossing surface stitches until the center has the appearance shown in the source. This is decorative coverage, not another structural increase round. Keep the thread relaxed enough that the flower stays open.

Make the second sandal to match, then compare the toe loops, flower width and tie lengths. The design has no protective sole and is not walking footwear. Keep the ties loose enough for the intended brief photo session, remove the accessory afterward and do not use tied sandals for unattended wear or sleep.

Frequently asked questions

Do these sandals have soles?

No. They are decorative flower-and-tie accessories for the top of the foot.

Why is the final flower anchor unusual?

The source specifies five petals over nine center stitches. The last placement needs the source photo rather than a falsely even two-stitch repeat.

Can I use the same yarn for both sizes?

The original size change depends on both yarn weight and hook size. Check the actual flower and loop dimensions if substituting.
