Crochet Cat Phone Pouch Pattern with a Striped Fish

· admin

Crochet cat phone pouches with fish details and long straps

This crochet cat phone pouch pattern combines a textured rectangular bag with a stuffed cat face, dangling paws and a striped fish. The supplied design includes a black-and-white head and a calico-style color option. Both use the same pouch, flap and strap, so choose the head you prefer rather than making two bags.

Materials and Finished Size

  • Sport-weight yarn such as YarnArt Jeans: beige or pink for the pouch; black and white for the cat; orange and white for the fish; scraps of pink and optional yellow. The source gives colors but no measured total yardage.
  • 2.3 mm crochet hook; tapestry needle, scissors, stitch marker, pins and polyester fiberfill for the stuffed details.
  • Two 15 mm buttons for the strap attachment; a sew-on magnetic snap for the flap, visible in the source assembly photographs.
  • Two 6 mm safety eyes for the character, or embroidered eyes instead.
  • Optional fabric glue for positioning details, as used in the source. Sewing the pieces down gives an additional mechanical attachment.

Reference size: approximately 17 × 10 cm (6.7 × 3.9 in), with a 113 cm (44.5 in) strap. These are sample measurements, not a promise of fit. Measure your phone with its case on and test the usable opening before adding the character. The dense shaping and sewn details suit a crocheter comfortable with amigurumi and small parts.

Stitches and Pattern Notes

US terms: ch = chain; sc = single crochet; inc = 2 sc in one stitch; dec = sc2tog; sl st = slip stitch; hdc = half double crochet; dc = double crochet; st(s) = stitch(es); MR = magic ring. Parentheses followed by a repeat number mean repeat that group. Numbers in the Total column are the completed stitches, except where chain spaces are explicitly included. Work the small animal pieces in continuous rounds unless a row or join is specified.

The designer uses yarn-under single crochet, which makes an X-shaped stitch. Use the same stitch style consistently if you want fabric close to the reference. A yarn-over single crochet sample can be a different size. Keep a marker in the first stitch and move it after each completed round. Turning chains added to flat rows are for height and do not count as stitches.

Step 1: Crochet the Phone Pouch

With the pouch color, ch 24. Work along both sides of this chain to create the oval bottom; do not join the chain into a ring.

Round / rowInstructionsTotal
1From the second ch: 22 sc, 3 sc in the last ch; along the other side, 21 sc, inc.48
2Inc, 21 sc, inc in each of the next 3 sts, 21 sc, inc twice.54
3Inc, 24 sc, inc in each of the next 3 sts, 24 sc, inc twice.60
4Sc around.60
5Repeat (ch 1, skip 1 st, sc in the next st) 30 times.30 sc + 30 ch-1 spaces
6Repeat (sc in the ch-1 space, sc in the next sc) 30 times.60
7–48Repeat Round 5 on odd-numbered rounds and Round 6 on even-numbered rounds; finish after Round 48.60 positions

Fasten off and weave in the end. Check that the phone slides in without forcing the side walls apart. Changing the foundation width also changes the oval increases and the placement of the decoration, so make and measure the pouch before committing to the small character pieces.

Step 2: Add the Flap and Strap

Mark fourteen centered stitches on the back at body Round 46. Rejoin yarn along those marked stitches and work 14 sc for the first flap row. Ch 1 and turn. Work twelve more rows of 14 sc, turning after each row, so the flap has thirteen rows. Fasten off and finish the ends. The source photographs show this flap folding over the opening.

For the strap, ch 3. Sc in the second ch and in the last ch for 2 sc. Ch 1, turn, then keep working two sc per row until the strip measures approximately 113 cm, or your chosen wearing length. Leave sewing tails. The reference uses a short folded loop at each strap end with the 15 mm side buttons; alternatively sew the ends securely to the two pouch sides. Check the length with the phone inside, because the fabric can stretch under its weight.

Fit the two halves of the magnetic snap to the flap and corresponding pouch front while they are aligned. Reinforce the attachment through several stitches, and keep the hardware out of the phone opening. The snap is visible in the source photographs even though its written materials list does not name it separately.

Step 3: Make the Cat Head

For the first head option, B means black and W means white. Color changes occur inside a round; complete the final pull-through of the preceding stitch in the next color. Keep unused strands relaxed inside the piece so the face does not pucker.

Fit the eyes between Rounds 12 and 13, with six stitches between them, before the head is closed. Add stuffing as the decreases narrow the opening; close the final eight stitches and retain an attachment tail if sewing the head to the pouch.

Optional Calico-Style Head

Y means yellow. Work Rounds 1–3 as above in black, then replace Rounds 4–17 with the following color sequence. Finish with the same white Rounds 18–24 from the first option.

3Repeat (sc, inc) three times.9
4Repeat (inc, 2 sc) three times.12
5Repeat (3 sc, inc) three times.15

Use the head colors shown in your chosen version. Do not stuff. Flatten and fold the open edge, secure the opposing stitches, then sew the ears over head Rounds 3–9.

Muzzle and Face

With white, work the following group twice into one MR: ch 2, 2 dc, ch 2, sl st into the ring. Close the ring and leave a tail. Sew the muzzle across head Rounds 12–15, embroider a pink tongue or nose detail, and add the black whiskers shown in the reference.

Step 4: Make the Paws and Arms

Legs — Make Two

4–5Sc around.16 each
6Repeat (2 sc, dec) four times.12
7Repeat (2 sc, dec) three times.9
8–9Sc around.9 each

Start in white. For the spotted second paw, work Round 4 and Round 5 as 4 white sc, 3 black sc and 9 white sc. All other rounds remain white. Stuff the lower paw up to Round 6, leaving the narrow upper section flexible. Keep tails for attaching at pouch Round 4.

Arms — Make Two

3Repeat (inc, 2 sc) three times.12
4Repeat (5 sc, inc) twice.14

14Orange: repeat (dec, 4 sc) twice.10
15White: repeat (3 sc, dec) twice.8
16Orange: repeat (dec, 2 sc) twice.6

Stuff the fish lightly as it narrows, but keep the last six stitches flat. Do not cut the orange yarn before making the tail. Flatten those six stitches into three opposing pairs.

  • First tail lobe: ch 7; starting in the second ch, work sl st, sc, hdc, dc, hdc, sc. Sl st through the first opposing body-stitch pair.
  • Sc through the middle pair. Make the second tail lobe with another ch 7 and the same six chain stitches; sl st through the third pair. Finish the end.
  • Dorsal fin: ch 4; from the second ch work sc, hdc, sc, then sl st in that final chain as well. Sew over fish Rounds 7–11.
  • Make two small side fins: ch 3, hdc in the third ch, ch 2 and sl st into that same third ch. Sew between fish Rounds 6 and 7. Embroider eyes between Rounds 4 and 5.

Step 6: Assemble the Cat Pouch

  1. Pin the two paws at pouch Round 4, check that they hang evenly, then sew them in place.
  2. Position the fish vertically on the front. Attach it without catching the opposite pouch wall.
  3. Sew the arms to the pouch and around the fish. Place the head above the fish and secure it.
  4. Check the snap, strap anchors and phone opening, then finish every remaining yarn tail.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which head version should I choose?

The black-and-white version has a centered white face. The calico-style option changes colors more often and includes a yellow patch. The pouch and other pieces are unchanged.

Can I use plain single crochet for the pouch?

That would be a fabric variation. This source uses alternating chain-space and solid rounds; the plain version will need its height and fit checked again.

Why are my paws different colors?

One reference paw carries a three-stitch black patch in Rounds 4–5. Make both plain white if you prefer a simpler color scheme; that changes the appearance, not the shaping.
