Cow Sunflower Planter finished crochet project

This cow sunflower planter crochet project puts a tall sunflower into a white-and-black cow-shaped pot. The pink oval nose, small ears and two horn extensions give the pot its face. The green stem continues directly from the closed soil section, with a dowel supporting the flower. It is the remaining cow variant from the Sweet Oddity Art Planter collection.

Materials

Worsted yarn in white, black, pink, brown, green and yellow; 3.25 mm hook, 24 mm eyes for the source cow, stuffing, marker, tapestry needle and a wooden dowel for the stem. The collection lists approximately 75 g main yarn and 25 g accents; actual use varies by variant.

Work the shared pot shape

Use US terms and continuous rounds unless the source calls for a join. Inc means two sc in one stitch; inc3 means three sc in one stitch. Mark the first stitch, especially while changing between white and black. Make the color change on the last yarn-over of the preceding stitch for a cleaner patch edge.

Round Work / count
1–5 8 sc, then 16, 24, 30 and 36. The first two increase rounds add eight; subsequent rounds add six.
6–7 36 sc in BLO, then 36 sc normally.
8–10 Increase to 42, work 42, increase to 48.
11–16 48 sc, using the cow patch schedule below.
17–19 Decrease to 42, decrease to 36, then one plain 36-stitch round.
20 FLO: chain 1 and 36 hdc for the rim.

Place the black patch and eyes

Round 12 is white 20, black 3, white 25. Rounds 13–14 are white 19, black 7, white 22. Round 15 is white 19, black 6, white 23; round 16 is white 20, black 5, white 23. In round 17, work white (6 sc, dec) twice and 5 sc, black sc and dec, then white (6 sc, dec) three times. The round finishes at 42.

Fit the eyes between rounds 14 and 15 with ten holes between them. The source’s cow uses 24 mm eyes, a different size from the other planter variants. Try the nose against the face before fastening the washers so the eye spacing matches its width.

Make the soil, horns and stem

Join brown into the free back loops of round 20. The ordinary soil round reduces 36 to 30, but the cow adds two horn chains within it. Begin with 4 sc, dec and 3 sc. Change to horn color, chain 4, then return with three sc in the second chain, hdc in the next and dc in the last. Resume brown: sc, dec, 4 sc, dec, 2 sc. Make the second horn, then work 2 sc, dec and (4 sc, dec) twice. There are thirty soil stitches; the horns project from them.

Continue reducing six per round: 24, 18, 12 and 6. Add the pot filling before the opening becomes small. Do not fasten off at six: change to green and work eighteen rounds of six sc for the stem. Insert the dowel inside, then close the top. The support should stay completely inside the crochet and should not push through the flower.

Make the nose and ears

Each ear begins with 6 sc, increases to 12, then uses (sc, inc) six times for 18. Skip four stitches, slip stitch into the next and slip stitch across the top to pinch the ear. Make one black and one white and leave sewing tails.

For the pink nose, chain 4 and work an oval. Round 1 uses an increase in the second chain, sc, three sc at the end and three sc along the underside: 9. Round 2 is inc twice, 2 sc, inc three times, sc and inc: 15. Round 3 is (sc, inc) twice, 2 sc, (sc, inc) three times, 2 sc and inc: 21. Work two plain rounds at 21. Sew it onto the cow face and embroider the nostrils.

Crochet the sunflower and leaves

The brown flower center starts with 5 sc and grows by five per round to 10, 15, 20 and 25. A yellow petal is chain 5, then sc in the second chain, hdc, dc and tr back along the chain, followed by slip stitches into the next two center stitches.

The source gives an odd twenty-five-stitch center but does not state a final petal count. For a fully explicit finish, this guide uses twelve petal units over twenty-four anchors, then a slip stitch in the remaining center stitch before closing. That final-stitch treatment is an editorial clarification, not a separately stated source petal count.

Each green leaf starts with chain 7 and begins in the third chain. Leaf one works (dc, tr), then 2 tr, 2 dc, hdc and sc along the remaining chains. Leaf two reverses the shape: sc, hdc, 2 dc, 2 tr and (tr, dc). Sew the two leaves to the stem and attach the sunflower above them.

Finish the cow character

Sew the ears beside the horn area and check the nose from the front. Secure all tails inside the pot or behind the attachments. Keep the flower centered over the stem so the pot stays level. This design has a rigid internal support and small eyes; the source construction is best treated as a decorative planter character.

Frequently asked questions

Is this another spider or polar-bear planter?

No. It is the cow-and-sunflower variant from the same collection, with its own patch schedule, horns, nose and flower.

Where does the sunflower stem begin?

It continues directly from the six remaining soil stitches, then works eighteen green rounds around the internal support.

Why is the last petal finish explained?

The source center has twenty-five stitches while its petal unit advances over pairs. The article labels a twelve-unit-plus-final-slip-stitch finish as an editorial clarification.
