Sunset Stripe Granny Bandana Crochet Pattern: Free PDF & Tutorial
· admin
The Sunset Stripe Granny Bandana is a light, colorful crochet head scarf made from a point-up granny triangle. Lilac, peach, cocoa, and buttercream rows give it a warm summer look, while a measured top edge and two ties make the fit easy to customize. Follow the steps below, then keep the free printable PDF pattern nearby as you work.
At a glance: Easy level · US crochet terms · 4-ply cotton in four colors · 3 mm (US D/3) hook · approximately 46, 53, or 60 cm (18, 21, or 23.5 in) across the straight top edge.
Materials and finished size
- Four small amounts of 4-ply cotton: lilac (A), peach (B), cocoa (C), and buttercream (D). Have about 200 m total available for a medium bandana; a larger triangle or longer ties may need more.
- 3 mm (US D/3) crochet hook, tapestry needle, scissors, and measuring tape.
Measure the straight top edge of the triangle laid flat, before counting the ties. Stop around 46 cm / 18 in for a smaller fit, 53 cm / 21 in for medium, or 60 cm / 23.5 in for larger coverage. Your tension changes the row count, so use the measurement as your guide.
US crochet abbreviations
ch = chain; dc = double crochet; sc = single crochet; sl st = slip stitch; sp = space; RS = right side. Each granny group is three dc. Use ch 1 between neighboring groups and ch 2 at the center opening.
Step 1: Start at the lower point
With lilac (A), ch 4 and sl st into the first chain to make a ring. Turn after every row. The starting ch 3 counts as the first dc of an edge group.
- Row 1: Ch 3, 2 dc in the ring, ch 2, then 3 dc in the ring. Turn. You have two groups around the center opening.
- Row 2: Ch 3, 2 dc in the first stitch, ch 1; work (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in the center ch-2 opening. Ch 1, work 3 dc in the top of the turning chain at the far edge. Turn. Four groups.
- Row 3: Ch 3, 2 dc in the first stitch, ch 1, 3 dc in the next ch-1 space, ch 1; work (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in the center. Ch 1, 3 dc in the next ch-1 space, ch 1, and 3 dc in the top of the far turning chain. Turn. Six groups.
Place a stitch marker in the far turning chain if it is difficult to find. Finishing each row there keeps the sloping sides balanced.
Step 2: Repeat the granny triangle row
For row 4 and every later row, ch 3 and work 2 dc in the first stitch, then ch 1. Work 3 dc in each ch-1 space on the first side, with ch 1 between groups. In the center ch-2 opening, work (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc). Ch 1, work 3 dc in each ch-1 space on the second side, and finish with 3 dc in the top of the far turning chain. Turn.
Each row adds two groups overall: row 4 has eight groups. Keep the center ch-2 opening at the midpoint, and lay the piece flat every few rows to check that both sides mirror each other.

Step 3: Plan the sunset stripes
Try lilac for rows 1–2, peach for rows 3–4, cocoa for rows 5–6, and buttercream for rows 7–8. Continue with the same four-color sequence in two-row bands, or arrange the colors to suit the yarn you have. Change shades on the last yarn-over of the final dc: draw the new color through the last two loops for a clean transition.
Stop after a complete row when the top edge reaches your chosen width. The exact number of rows can vary with cotton and tension.

Step 4: Make the top edge and ties
Fasten off the triangle. With the right side facing, join peach (B), or your chosen accent color, at one outer top corner. Chain until the first cord measures about 32–38 cm / 12.5–15 in. Starting in the second chain from the hook, sc back along the chain to the corner.
Work one sc into each dc and each ch-1 space along the final row, and 2 sc in the center ch-2 opening. At the opposite corner, make a second tie to the same measured length and sc back along it. Sl st into the corner and fasten off.
Step 5: Finish the bandana
For an optional peach border, join yarn at a top corner and sc into the row ends down one sloping side. Work 2 sc at the lower point and sc into the row ends up the other side. Keep the stitches relaxed so the edge lies flat. Weave in all tails, lightly block the cotton, and try the bandana on before trimming the last tail.
