Summertime Cuties Crochet Frog Baby Bucket Hat

Green frog bucket hat from the Summertime Cuties source

This crochet frog baby bucket hat uses the small hat base from Summertime Cuties and adds layered green, white and black crochet eyes. The face is sewn onto a simple double-crochet hat. The collection also contains strawberry, chick and bee versions; the written instructions here select the small frog rather than mixing their decorations.

Materials, Gauge and Size

Thinner worsted / category 4 yarn in light green, white, black and pink; 4 mm hook, needle, scissors and marker. The source uses Big Twist and Mainstays yarns. Gauge is four dc and two rounds per inch, checked in the round. The small source hat is about 13–14 in around, labelled newborn. Measure the intended head and make a swatch; the size label is not a guarantee of fit. No beads are needed for this frog.

Stitches and Pattern Notes

US crochet terms: ch = chain; sc = single crochet; hdc = half double crochet; dc = double crochet; tr = treble crochet; sl st = slip stitch; st = stitch; sp = space; BLO = back loop only; inc = 2 stitches in one stitch. Sc2tog, hdc2tog and dc2tog combine two neighboring stitches into one. A number before a stitch tells you how many consecutive stitches to work. Parentheses followed by a repeat number describe one complete group repeated that many times.

Step 1: Increase the Crown

Row / roundInstructionsCount / note
1Magic ring, ch 2 without counting it, 13 dc; join to first dc.13
2Ch 2; inc-dc in every stitch; join.26
3Ch 2; (inc-dc, dc) thirteen times; join.39
4Ch 2; dc, (inc-dc, 2 dc) twelve times, inc-dc, dc; join.52

Step 2: Work the Hat Body

Work six further joined rounds of 52 dc, beginning each with ch 2 that does not count as a stitch. Count only the actual dc. These are the small size’s straight crown/body rounds after its four increase rounds. Keep the joining point aligned rather than adding a stitch into the slip stitch.

The same source also gives medium and adult versions, but their additional increase rounds are not part of this small hat. Finish the small body before trying the brim, and measure its relaxed circumference against your swatch.

Step 3: Flare the Brim

FLO means front loop only. Brim Round 1: ch 2, work (inc-dc in FLO, dc in FLO of next two stitches) seventeen times, then dc in FLO of the final stitch; join (69). The final plain dc makes the source’s incomplete three-stitch repeat explicit on a 52-stitch base. Brim Round 2: ch 2, (inc-dc, 2 dc) twenty-three times; join (92). Brim Round 3: ch 2, (dc, inc-dc) forty-six times; join (138). Fasten off.

These totals are calculated for the selected thirteen-dc starting ring, not the source’s optional twelve-dc adult variation. The first FLO round leaves a ridge where the brim changes direction. Keep the brim joins loose so the edge can flare.

Step 4: Make the Frog Face

For every circular face part, begin with a magic ring and ch 1 that does not count. Round 1: 8 sc. Round 2: inc in each stitch (16). Round 3: (inc, sc) eight times (24). Stop at the required size: two black pupils stop after Round 1; two white iris discs stop after Round 2; two green eye backs stop after Round 3. Make two pink cheeks using Rounds 1–2 (16 each). Leave sewing tails.

Center a black pupil on each white disc and sew it down. Center that white-and-black unit on a green backing, keeping the green rim visible. The source’s small frog uses these layered circles; use the photo to position the pupils in matching directions. The eye layers can remain flat rather than being filled.

Step 5: Assemble and Finish

Pin the eyes along the upper front so they sit evenly above the hat body. Sew their lower edges securely through several hat stitches. Place the pink cheeks on the front and embroider the curved black mouth between them. Keep every attachment tail inside and weave it through multiple stitches.

The photographs include the collection’s frog and bee hats; close crops are identified as source views. These decorations do not change the small hat’s crown count. Check the fit and all sewn parts, then wash according to the yarn label. The two similarly named Bucket Hat files in the supplied collection contain the same design and are treated as one source project here.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are the eyes plastic? No. This version uses crocheted black, white and green circles.

Does the small hat need Round 5 of the crown? No. Stop increasing after Round 4 at 52 stitches, then work six plain rounds.

Why are brim counts written out here? They clarify how to finish the source repeat when 52 stitches leave one position after seventeen three-stitch groups.
