Garden of Joy Crochet Rug: Floral Base and Motif Guide

· admin

Garden of Joy Rug finished crochet project

The Garden of Joy crochet rug is a large circular floral display with a firm striped base, surface-crochet borders and many separately made flowers. The source sample measures about 130 cm across. This project guide covers the complete base sequence and maps the decorative motifs to their original pages, making the thirty-page pattern easier to organize.

Materials

Scheepjes Colour Crafter DK, 100 g / 300 m, in the source color palette; Rico Creative Pompon yarn in Baby Pink 019; hooks listed above, tapestry needle, scissors and optional filling for domed flower centers. Use the original yarn list for the full color allocation.

Plan the yarn strands and hook changes

The center base uses three DK strands together with an 8 mm hook. The source allows a 9 or 10 mm hook for a very tight crocheter, but the goal is a relatively firm base. Surface borders use two strands with the 8 mm hook. Large outer flowers use two strands with 7 mm; their blue hearts use two strands with 5 mm. Most smaller decorations use one strand with 3.5 mm.

Label those strand-and-hook combinations before starting. Accidentally using a single strand for the base or a large outer flower changes the scale dramatically. The source names Colour Crafter shades including mint-green Almelo 1316, orange The Hague 1256, yellow-green Coevorden 1823, black Ede 1002, peach Lelystad 1026 and pink Apeldoorn 1435, with additional motif colors in the original material list.

Crochet the central base

Use US single crochet and joined rounds. Begin with a chain-three ring. Chain 1 at the beginning of each round and close with a slip stitch. Start with 6 sc, then add six evenly spaced increases per increasing round. For example, round 3 repeats (inc, sc), round 4 repeats (inc, 2 sc), and round 17 repeats (inc, 15 sc).

Rounds Color and count Important change
1–17 Mint green: 6 to 102, adding 6 per round. Keep the base flat.
18–24 Mint green: 108 to 144. Before round 18, move the start 8 stitches forward.
25 Mint green: 144. No increases on this round.
26–28 Orange: 150, 156, 162. Move the new start 11 stitches forward.
29–33 Yellow green: 168 to 192. Move the new start 10 stitches forward.
34–38 Black: 198 to 222. Move the new start 11 stitches forward.
39–43 Black: 228 to 252. Move the start 10 stitches forward again.

To shift a start, fasten off, count forward from the old round start and rejoin as directed. These shifts stagger the increase lines. Round 25 is the deliberate exception to the six-increase rule; after it, round 26 repeats (inc, 23 sc) six times. Continue increasing the number of intervening sc by one on each following round.

Finish the base edge and surface borders

Round 44 changes to orange, still using three strands. Each scallop spreads across two neighboring stitches: slip stitch, chain 2 and dc in the first, then dc, chain 2 and slip stitch in the next. Skip two stitches before the next scallop. Round 45 changes to peach and covers each scallop with five sc, with a slip stitch between scallops.

The source then adds seven surface-crochet lines along the base’s color changes. At the mint/orange transition, add peach and black, catching the pompon strand into the black line about every two stitches. At orange/yellow-green, add black and dark green. At yellow-green/black, add dark green. At black/orange edging, add peach and dark green. Keep the working yarn above the right-side surface as the original method shows.

Organize the outer floral border

Make 28 large flowers in the pink palette. Their basic structure is an eight-loop petal ring followed by another eight-loop ring behind it. The front petals use (sl st, chain 1, dc, tr, dc, sc); the rear petals add a second tr. A small surface ring supports five additional irregularly placed front petals. The separate light-blue heart is a tiny joined dc dome sewn in the middle. Follow PDF pages 12–15 for the original stitch diagrams, especially the source’s center-chain counting.

Make 28 double leaves in single-strand mint green. Each leaf works around a chain-nine foundation with sc at the ends and dc/tr through its broad middle. After the first leaf, chain twelve: three chains form the joining stem and nine begin the second leaf. Sew the leaf tips to the peach finishing edge and the middle beneath the neighboring flowers. The source refers to that edge once as dc, but round 45 explicitly uses sc.

Use this motif production map

Decoration Source quantity PDF pages
Large flowers / smaller center versions 28 outer; 5 small 12–15
Double leaves 28 16
Rosebuds Five color groups of 8 17
XL rosebuds 10 18
Single leaves / XL leaves 26 / 10 19–20
Three-petal flowers 13 bright; 8 light 21
Mini hearts and small accents Place as in the original layout 22
Small flowers / polka dots 40 / 16 23
Flower buds 10 24
Layered / layered-petal / scalloped flowers 3 / 3 / 4 25–29

The rosebuds are rolled strips with leaves formed at one end. The XL leaves add a surface-slip-stitch vein, while the layered flowers place another petal ring over an earlier ring. Arrange before attaching

Lay the base completely flat and position all decorations before sewing. Distribute the outer twenty-eight flowers first, then place double leaves beneath their joins. Work inward through the black and yellow-green bands before filling the mint center. Photograph the temporary arrangement so the spacing can be restored as pieces are lifted for sewing.

Stitch through stable parts of the base and several points of each motif, keeping the back neat. Check that the rug still lies flat after each section. The raised flowers make this a highly textured decorative piece; choose its display location with that surface in mind. The source gives no tested anti-slip backing or washing method for the completed embellished rug.

Frequently asked questions

Does the base stop at round 44?

No. Round 44 makes the orange scallops and round 45 adds the peach single-crochet finish.

Why is round 25 different?

It stays at 144 stitches with no increases. All later count calculations must preserve that exception.

Are all flowers made with the same hook?

No. Large outer flowers use two strands and 7 mm; their hearts use 5 mm. Most small motifs use one strand and 3.5 mm.
