Crochet Baby Booties with Raised Contrast Straps

· admin

Contrast-Strap Baby Booties original crochet project

These crochet baby booties have a raised contrast strip between the soles and the upper. Broad pointed straps cross over the top and close with hook-and-loop tape. The source calls them Baby Boy’s Booties, but the construction works with any chosen color palette. A measured ten-to-eleven-centimeter sole is the main fit checkpoint.

Materials and gauge

DK yarn with some cotton content in two colors, 3.5 mm hook, two small hook-and-loop pieces, needle, sewing thread and scissors. Source gauge: ten stitches per 5 cm.

Build the oval sole

Use US terms. Chain 9 and begin in the second chain. Work 7 sc, three sc at the far end, 6 sc along the underside and two sc at the final end to make eighteen stitches. Join each round and mark the first actual stitch so the joining slip stitch does not become an extra anchor.

The following rounds add six stitches each time. Sc shapes the heel and straight portions while dc increases shape the toe. The totals progress 24, 30, 36, 42, 48 and 54 through sole round 7. Change to the contrast yarn on round 7, then measure the sole length before making the sidewall.

Create the raised contrast strip

Rounds 8–9 work raised single crochet back at 54 stitches. This is the source’s back-post sc placement, wrapping around the stitch post from the back rather than using the normal top loops. The two rounds make the ridge that visually separates the sole and upper.

Change back to the main color for two ordinary sc rounds at 54. Keep that first main-color round loose enough to sit above the ridge; a tight color transition can pull the sidewall inward before the toe decreases begin.

Shape the toe over four rounds

Round Shaping Total
12 13 sc; four repeats of dc2tog and 3 dc; another dc2tog; 17 sc; sc2tog. 48
13 13 sc; four repeats of dc2tog and 2 dc; another dc2tog; 15 sc; sc2tog. 42
14 13 sc; four repeats of dc2tog and dc; another dc2tog; 13 sc; sc2tog. 36
15 13 sc, five dc2tog, 13 sc. 31

Each dc2tog joins two neighboring stitches into one. Keep the taller decrease groups centered over the toe and the final sc decrease near the rear shaping position. Count the full round before fastening off; a missing decrease changes the strap opening as well as the toe width.

Make two pointed straps

Each strap starts with chain 9 and eight sc. Work twelve rows at eight stitches, turning with chain 1. Row 13 decreases at both ends for six stitches; row 14 does the same for four, and row 15 uses two decreases to finish at two. Leave a tail for attaching the straight end.

Add the contrast surface-chain decoration along the rounded strap edge as pictured. Pin each strap in place with its point reaching the opposite side of the shoe. Mirror the attachments across the pair rather than sewing both straps to the same side.

Fit and secure the closures

Cut small matching hook-and-loop pieces and sew them firmly to the underside of the strap point and the corresponding shoe side. Test the closure before burying the sewing tails. The strap should hold the bootie without drawing the opening tightly over the foot.

Finish a matching pair

Compare the two soles, ridge heights and strap lengths before the final sewing. Weave yarn tails into the back of the corresponding color and keep the shoe interior smooth. The source suggests cotton-containing yarn for structure; any substitution still needs a gauge and fit check before the full pair is made.

Frequently asked questions

How long is the finished sole?

The source checkpoint after round 7 is approximately 10–11 cm, associated with its 3–6 month label.

What makes the raised stripe?

Two rounds of raised back-post single crochet in the contrast color.

Are the straps crocheted onto the upper?

They are made as separate eight-stitch strips, shaped to points and sewn onto the shoes.
