Crochet Bluebell Flowers Pattern with Wired Stems and Leaves

· admin

This crochet bluebell flowers pattern creates gently hanging bells for a small handmade plant. This design combines individual crocheted bells with long green leaves, supported by florist wire. Make the flowers first, then arrange them on a central stem so each bell remains visible. The source recommends six to eight flowers for a full stem and six leaves around the base.

Materials for the Crochet Bluebell Flowers Pattern

  • Approximately 2 m of blue yarn per flower.
  • Approximately 14 m of green cotton yarn; the source uses yarn twice the thickness of the flower yarn for the leaves.
  • Hooks suitable for both yarns: the source sample uses a 1 mm hook with lace yarn for the bells and a 2.2 mm hook with doubled lace yarn for the leaves.
  • Approximately 3 m of florist wire, cutting pliers, scissors and a yarn needle.

Before you begin

Use US terms. Ch means chain, sc single crochet, hdc half double crochet, dc double crochet and sl st slip stitch. An increase means two stitches in one stitch. There is no fixed gauge. The source sample flowers measure about 2 cm across and the leaves about 14 cm long. These dimensions depend on yarn, hook and tension. Work tightly enough for the bells to keep their shape.

1Make a magic ring. Ch 3, counting as the first dc, then work 9 dc into the ring. Join to the top of the beginning ch-3.10 dc
2Ch 3, counting as the first dc, and work another dc in the same stitch. Work 1 dc in the next stitch. Repeat (2 dc in the next stitch, 1 dc in the following stitch) four more times. Join to the beginning ch-3.15 dc
3Ch 3, counting as the first dc. Work 1 dc in each of the next 14 stitches. Join to the beginning ch-3.15 dc
4Ch 1. Repeat the following five times: 1 sc in each of the next two stitches, then (dc, dc, picot, dc) in the next stitch. Join to the first sc. Fasten off and weave in the ends.5 petals

For the picot used here, ch 3 and slip stitch into the first of those three chains. The flower rounds are arranged to give the source’s stated totals of 10, 15 and 15 dc before the five-petal edge. Count the beginning ch-3 as one dc, rather than adding it to the total.

Add a wire to each flower

Cut a 20 cm length of florist wire for each bell. Weave it in and out around the first round of the flower. Twist the wire behind the bell to hold the flower firmly, keeping the twisted area behind the crochet fabric. Repeat for six to eight bells, or for the number needed for your arrangement.

Make the long leaves

Make six leaves. With the green yarn, ch 28. Beginning in the second chain from the hook, work: 1 sc, 6 hdc, 14 dc, 5 hdc and 1 sc in the final chain. Fasten off and weave in the ends. The sequence uses 27 foundation chains.

For each leaf, cut wire about 15 cm longer than the finished leaf. Weave the wire along the foundation chain to the tip. Leave the remaining wire at the base for attaching the leaf to the central stem. Shape the leaf gently into a curve.

Assemble the bluebell stem

  1. Arrange the wired bells at different heights along a central stem. Turn the bell openings outward or slightly downward.
  2. Gather and secure the flower wires together to form a bunch.
  3. Position the six leaves around the central stem, about 10 cm below the lowest flower as shown in the source.
  4. Bend the leaves into gentle outward curves. Check that the flower heads remain visible from different sides.

Questions before you finish

Can I change the flower size?

Yes. The quoted 2 cm diameter belongs to the designer’s lace-yarn sample. A different yarn and suitable hook will produce a different size.

How many flowers do I need?

The source recommends six to eight per stem. You can make fewer for a small sprig, but keep the same instructions for each individual bell.
