Plush Crochet Baby Booties with a Shaped Toe

· admin

Purple plush crochet booties with white pompoms

These plush crochet baby booties use a contrasting oval sole, smooth sides and a gathered toe. The supplied sample adds pompoms and ties; the stitched boot itself can be finished without those optional decorations. The construction differs from a flat ballet shoe because the raised cuff continues directly above the closed toe.

Materials, Gauge and Size

Himalaya Dolphin Baby or YarnArt Dolce, super bulky chenille yarn (100 g / 120 m), in two colors; 3.5–4 mm hook, markers, needle and scissors. The source reports an 8–13 cm range depending on hook and foundation, with its ch-14 / 3.5 mm sample fitting a foot up to about 10 cm. No fixed gauge or measured total yarn quantity is supplied. Measure the actual foot and the inside of your first sole.

Stitches and Pattern Notes

US crochet terms: ch = chain; sc = single crochet; hdc = half double crochet; dc = double crochet; tr = treble crochet; sl st = slip stitch; st = stitch; sp = space; BLO = back loop only; inc = 2 stitches in one stitch. Sc2tog, hdc2tog and dc2tog combine two neighboring stitches into one. A number before a stitch tells you how many consecutive stitches to work. Parentheses followed by a repeat number describe one complete group repeated that many times.

Step 1: Work the Sole

Row / roundInstructionsCount / note
1Ch 14. From second ch: 12 sc, 4 sc in last ch; return along the opposite side with 11 sc and inc in the starting chain.29
212 sc, inc in each of next 4 sts, 11 sc, inc twice.35
3Sc, inc, 9 sc, (sc, inc) four times, 12 sc, inc, 2 sc, inc; sl st and fasten off.42

Step 2: Raise the Sides

Join the second color at the heel. Round 4: sc in BLO of all 42 stitches. Rounds 5–6: sc in both loops around, keeping 42 stitches. Keep a marker at the heel and one at the toe center. The unworked front loops of Round 4 remain available for the optional sole edging.

Step 3: Close the Toe

Flatten and center the boot. Mark a 22-stitch section across the front. Row 7: (sc, sc2tog) seven times, then sc (15). Ch 1 and turn. Row 8: seven sc2tog and one sc (8). Ch 1 and turn. Row 9: draw up a loop in each of the eight stitches, yarn over and pull through all nine loops to make sc8tog.

The source notes that a differently sized foundation changes this toe section. These exact counts belong to the ch-14 version. Keep its 22-stitch toe section centered rather than copying the numbers after changing the sole.

Step 4: Make the Cuff

Work around the remaining opening to establish the source’s 25-sc cuff, picking up evenly across the toe closure and side edges. Work seven sc rounds, numbered 10–16 in the original. Fasten off and weave in the ends with a needle. For the contrasting sole ridge, slip stitch around the exposed front loops left by Round 4.

Keep the cuff soft and check that the opening does not pull tight. Compare the first bootie’s inside sole and cuff to the intended fit before making the second. Use the same hook, foundation and round counts for its partner.

Step 5: Finish the Pair

The source decorates the boots with 3.5–5 cm pompoms and ch-65 ties. Those additions are optional; this written version leaves ties off, and a plain cuff can also be left without pompoms. The photograph shows the decorated source sample so you can see the original styling. Secure any chosen attachment carefully and inspect it before use. Finish chenille ends by weaving rather than applying a flame.

Wash according to your yarn label, reshape gently and remeasure once dry. The source’s lengths are sample measurements rather than an age chart, so do not assume every newborn uses the same foundation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the cuff start from a new piece? No. It grows around the opening left after closing the toe.

Are the pompoms required? No. They decorate the source sample but do not shape the boot.

What is sc8tog? It gathers eight stitches into one by drawing up eight loops, then pulling through all loops on the hook.
