Look Who Has Arrived crochet blanket with raised lettering and hearts

This Look Who Has Arrived crochet baby blanket places raised lettering and small hearts over a single-crochet background. The message is built directly into the rows using large puffs rather than added as embroidery afterward. The supplied chart and row placements are kept together below so you can check the letters as they emerge.

Materials, Gauge and Size

The source uses Stylecraft Special DK acrylic in Pale Rose 1080 for the body, about 1½ × 100 g balls, and Cream 1005 for the edge. Start with a 4 mm hook or adjust to gauge; the source suggests 4–5 mm with light worsted and 5–5.5 mm with aran for a different size. Reference dimensions: about 21 × 20 in. Gauge: 17 stitches × 18 rows per 4 in. Use a needle, scissors and markers for both row edges.

Stitches and Pattern Notes

US crochet terms: ch = chain; sc = single crochet; hdc = half double crochet; dc = double crochet; tr = treble crochet; sl st = slip stitch; st = stitch; sp = space; BLO = back loop only; inc = 2 stitches in one stitch. Sc2tog, hdc2tog and dc2tog combine two neighboring stitches into one. A number before a stitch tells you how many consecutive stitches to work. Parentheses followed by a repeat number describe one complete group repeated that many times.

Step 1: Make the Large Puff

The source’s puff is larger than the nine-loop puff used in many blankets. Yarn over and draw up a loop in the same stitch six times, giving thirteen loops on the hook. Yarn over and pull through twelve loops, leaving two; yarn over and pull through those two. Work the next sc as written in the row to secure the puff. That sc is already included in the placement instructions: do not add an extra locking stitch.

Puffs are worked from the wrong side so they project on the front. Keep their loops tall enough to pull through smoothly. Count each puff as one stitch position, regardless of how many loops were on the hook.

Step 2: Establish the Background

Ch 76. Row 1: sc in the second chain and each remaining chain for 75 sc, preferably into the back bumps for a neat lower edge. Ch 1 and turn. Work every even-numbered row in sc across all 75 positions. On odd rows follow the placement table. Every row ends with ch 1 and a turn unless it is the final fastening-off row.

Place markers in the first and last stitches and move them every row. The lettering is easy to shift if an edge sc is skipped. The source chart is shown as a visual check; the written row number, rather than the viewing direction of the turned work, determines which row comes next.

Step 4: Check the Lettering as You Work

The sc-only even rows separate the raised placement rows. Pause after each word section and lay the blanket with the puffs facing up. Compare the emerging letters to the source chart instead of judging them from the working wrong side. Rows described as all sc still contain 75 stitches.

Some source expressions use nested repeats: work the entire outer group again, including every puff inside it. For example, a repeated group containing (ps, 3 sc) consumes four positions each time. Do not count the turning chain or the closing loops of a puff as extra stitches. Row 93 is the final sc row; fasten off and weave in the ends after completing it.

Step 5: Add the Contrasting Edge

The source prepares the two long sides with a row of sc in the body color, creating a tidy base before its cream shell border. Work the side stitches evenly so the fabric stays flat. The supplied copy names a shell border but does not give its exact repeat.

For an explicitly stated optional edging, use a standard five-dc shell: prepare each side so a repeat of (sc, skip one, 5 dc in next stitch, skip one) can fit between corners. Place an anchoring sc at each corner, adjusting only the preparation round’s spacing if needed. This is an editorial border option, not a claim that the source specified those exact shell counts. You may instead leave the prepared sc edge plain. Wash and shape according to the yarn label.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do puffs add stitches to the row? No. Each puff occupies one of the 75 positions.

What happens on even rows? Sc across all 75 positions, ch 1 and turn.

Is the five-dc border part of the supplied written pattern? The source names a shell edge but omits its exact steps. The five-dc version above is clearly identified as an optional editorial finish.
