Crochet Potion Bottle Doll Pattern with Boots and a Pocket
· admin
This crochet potion bottle is a whimsical Halloween doll with a tapered bottle-shaped head, colorful boots, narrow arms and a little front pocket. The grey top resembles a stopper, while the pale-blue bottle body becomes the character’s face. The source has several small wording and count errors; the clarified instructions below identify the necessary corrections instead of silently repeating them.

Stitches and pattern notes
Unless stated otherwise, this article uses US crochet terms. ch = chain; sl st = slip stitch; sc = single crochet; hdc = half double crochet; dc = double crochet; inc = 2 stitches in one stitch; dec = work 2 stitches together; MR = magic ring; BLO/FLO = back/front loop only. Numbers in the final column are the finished stitch counts.
The head and body are separate components; the head’s bottom opening and the torso’s neck both finish at 24 stitches. The table numbers the unlabelled leg-joining round as Round 18, preserving the source’s Round 19 increase. Work securely and stuff in small portions so the slender neck is supported.
Crochet the bottle-shaped head
Head and stopper
| Round / row | Instructions | Count |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | In grey, 6 sc in MR. | 6 |
| 2 | 6 inc. | 12 |
| 3 | (sc, inc) × 6. | 18 |
| 4 | BLO sc around. | 18 |
| 5–7 | Sc around. | 18 |
| 8 | Change to blue; BLO (2 sc, inc) × 6. | 24 |
| 9–12 | Sc around. | 24 |
| 13 | (3 sc, inc) × 6. | 30 |
| 14–15 | Sc around. | 30 |
| 16 | (4 sc, inc) × 6. | 36 |
| 17 | (5 sc, inc) × 6. | 42 |
| 18 | Sc around. | 42 |
| 19 | (6 sc, inc) × 6. | 48 |
| 20–21 | Sc around. | 48 |
| 22 | (7 sc, inc) × 6. | 54 |
| 23–34 | Sc around. | 54 |
| 35 | (7 sc, dec) × 6. | 48 |
| 36 | BLO (6 sc, dec) × 6. | 42 |
| 37 | (5 sc, dec) × 6. | 36 |
| 38 | (4 sc, dec) × 6. | 30 |
| 39 | (3 sc, dec) × 6. | 24 |
Fit eyes between Rounds 30–31, about 13 sc apart. Check their spacing from the front before attaching the backs. The original says to return to the front loops at the Round 8 color boundary, but gives no stitch sequence for that finishing line. Leave those loops as a clean ridge, or add a simple slip-stitch outline as an editorial optional finish. Do not treat that optional outline as an additional numbered head round.
Boots and legs: make two
| Round / row | Instructions | Count |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | In boot color, ch 7. From second chain: 5 sc, 4 sc in the end chain; along underside: 4 sc, inc. | 15 |
| 2 | Inc, 4 sc, 4 inc, 4 sc, 2 inc. | 22 |
| 3 | Sc, inc, 4 sc, (sc, inc) × 4, 4 sc, (sc, inc) × 2. | 29 |
| 4 | 2 sc, inc, 4 sc, (2 sc, inc) × 4, 4 sc, (2 sc, inc) × 2. | 36 |
| 5–7 | Sc around. | 36 |
| 8 | 12 sc, 6 hdc decreases, 12 sc. | 30 |
| 9 | (3 sc, dec) × 6. | 24 |
| 10 | 3 sc, dec, (sc, dec) × 5, 4 sc. | 18 |
| 11 | 2 sc, dec, (4 sc, dec) × 2, 2 sc. | 15 |
| 12 | Change to leg color; sc around. | 15 |
| 13 | BLO sc around. | 15 |
| 14–17 | Sc around. | 15 |
Count clarification: the source prints 13 after the first boot round, but its written stitches total 15. The next round also consumes 15, so 15 is the consistent starting count. Work a 15-dc cuff into the free front loops at Round 13. Add five extra sc on the second leg to align it for joining; these are positioning stitches, not another complete round.

Join the legs and crochet the torso
| Round / row | Instructions | Count |
|---|---|---|
| 18 | Fasten off leg 1; keep leg 2’s yarn attached. Join directly and work 15 sc around each leg. | 30 |
| 19 | (4 sc, inc) × 6. | 36 |
| 20 | Sc around. | 36 |
| 21 | Change to torso color; sc around. | 36 |
| 22 | BLO sc around. | 36 |
| 23–25 | Sc around. | 36 |
| 26 | (4 sc, dec) × 6. | 30 |
| 27 | Sc around. | 30 |
| 28 | (3 sc, dec) × 6. | 24 |
| 29–31 | Sc around. | 24 |
The source accidentally says to cut and retain the second leg’s yarn in the same sentence. Here the first leg is fastened off and the second remains attached, which allows the direct 30-stitch join. Sew any tiny gap between the legs closed. Return to the front loops at torso Round 22 and work 36 dc as a decorative lower hem. Stuff the body and sew its neck to the head’s 24-stitch opening.
Arms: make two
| Round / row | Instructions | Count |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 6 sc in MR. | 6 |
| 2 | 6 inc. | 12 |
| 3 | Sc around. | 12 |
| 4 | 10 sc, dec. | 11 |
| 5 | 9 sc, dec. | 10 |
| 6–14 | Sc around. | 10 |
Flatten each arm opening and close through both sides with a row of sc. Leave tails to sew the arms beside the upper torso. Keep the last part lightly stuffed or unstuffed so the arms lie close to the body.
Pocket and boot details
For the pocket, chain 5. From the second chain work inc, 2 sc, inc = 6 sc; turn and work one more row of 6 sc. An editorial ch-1 turning chain may be used for height and does not count. Sew the bottom and sides onto the belly, leaving the top open. For each boot’s decorative strip, chain 10 and work 9 sl st back from the second chain, then sew it in place.
Shape the face and complete assembly
With a long needle and matching yarn, enter from below the neck and emerge just below one eye. Reinsert one stitch away and return to the neck. Repeat for the second eye, gently drawing both paths to define the face, then knot securely. Stop as soon as the expression is shaped; excess tension can pull the eyes inward. Embroider eyebrows, lashes and a smile in fine black yarn. Compare the source photo for the placement of the arms, pocket and cuffs.

Tips for a neat finish
- Check the corrected 15-stitch boot foundation before proceeding.
- Keep both soles facing forward when making the direct leg join.
- Use the reserved front loops for decorative cuffs and hem, keeping those additions separate from main-round counts.
- Pin the head and arms first so the narrow torso supports the large bottle head evenly.
Frequently asked questions
Is this a plain stuffed potion bottle?
It is an anthropomorphic bottle doll with boots, arms and a pocket; the photos show that complete character.
Why is the first boot count different from the PDF?
The written stitches add up to 15 and the next round requires 15 base stitches. The printed 13 is inconsistent with both.
Are the finishing clarifications physically tested?
No. They are transparent document and stitch-count clarifications. Use the original construction photos while working, particularly at the joins and decorative edges.
