Bonnie Baby Beanie Crochet Pattern in Five Sizes
· admin
The Bonnie baby beanie crochet pattern uses simple single crochet in a spiral and finishes with a narrow ribbed brim. Self-striping yarn supplies the color changes, so there is no separate stripe chart. The supplied design gives five sizes from 0–3 through 18–24 months; use the matching measurements and stitch counts throughout.

Materials, Gauge and Size
Paintbox Baby DK Prints, 50 g balls: one ball for each of the first three sizes and two balls for each of the last two. Use 3.5 mm / US E-4 hook for the hat and 3 mm / US D-3 hook for the brim, plus a marker, needle and scissors. Gauge in continuous-round sc is 24 stitches and 27 rows per 4 in / 10 cm. These are finished source measurements, not the wearer’s head circumference.
Stitches and Pattern Notes
US crochet terms: ch = chain; sc = single crochet; hdc = half double crochet; dc = double crochet; tr = treble crochet; sl st = slip stitch; st = stitch; sp = space; BLO = back loop only; inc = 2 stitches in one stitch. Sc2tog, hdc2tog and dc2tog combine two neighboring stitches into one. A number before a stitch tells you how many consecutive stitches to work. Parentheses followed by a repeat number describe one complete group repeated that many times.
Choose One Consistent Size
| Source age label | Finished measurements | Body count / last round |
|---|---|---|
| 0–3 months | 30 cm around × 14 cm long | 72 body sts; finish body at R32 |
| 3–6 months | 32.5 cm × 15 cm | 78 sts; finish at R35 |
| 6–12 months | 35 cm × 16 cm | 84 sts; finish at R38 |
| 12–18 months | 37.5 cm × 16.5 cm | 90 sts; finish at R40 |
| 18–24 months | 40 cm × 17 cm | 96 sts; finish at R42 |
Step 1: Increase the Crown
With 3.5 mm hook, make a magic ring. Round 1: ch 1 without counting it, then 6 sc in the ring. Do not join or turn. Round 2: inc in each stitch (12). Mark the last stitch and move the marker up every round.
For Rounds 3–12, repeat (inc, sc in the next N stitches) six times, increasing N by one in each round. N is 1 in Round 3, 2 in Round 4, continuing through 10 in Round 12. Your totals are 18, 24, 30, 36, 42, 48, 54, 60, 66 and 72. The six increases add exactly six stitches per round.

Step 2: Finish the Correct Crown and Body
For 0–3 months, stop increasing at 72 stitches and sc around for Rounds 13–32. For 3–6 months, work Round 13 as (inc, 11 sc) six times (78), then sc around for Rounds 14–35. For 6–12 months, add Round 14 as (inc, 12 sc) six times (84), then work Rounds 15–38 plain.
For 12–18 months, add Round 15 as (inc, 13 sc) six times (90), then work Rounds 16–40 plain. For 18–24 months, add Round 16 as (inc, 14 sc) six times (96), then work Rounds 17–42 plain. Check the total for your chosen size before starting the straight body.
Step 3: Attach the Ribbed Brim
At the end of the final body round, sl st in the next stitch without fastening off. Change to 3 mm hook and ch 6 to begin the brim at right angles to the hat. Brim Row 1: sc from the second chain across (5 sc), sl st into the next hat-body stitch and turn. Row 2: skip that joining sl st and work 5 BLO sc back along the rib; turn.
Row 3: ch 1, work 5 BLO sc back toward the hat, sl st into each of the next two body stitches and turn. Row 4: skip both joining slip stitches, work 5 BLO sc along the rib and turn. Repeat Rows 3–4 around the hat, finishing on a Row 4. The joining slip stitches anchor the rib; they are not extra rib stitches.

Step 4: Seam and Finish
On the wrong side, join the two short brim ends. Work from the outer brim edge toward the hat, slip stitching through the front loop of each final-row stitch and the matching back loop of the original foundation chain. Fasten off and weave the ends inside.
The source adds a small pompom at the crown. That is optional decoration; omit it for a plain finish. If using one, secure it carefully and inspect its attachment. Measure the finished brim relaxed after washing according to the yarn label. A different yarn or looser gauge can change the finished circumference substantially.
