· admin
Bring a little color to your doorway or craft room with an April Flowers Wreath. This easy crochet project combines four flower styles, simple green leaves and a wrapped 14 in (35.5 cm) wreath form. The instructions below use US crochet terms, and a free six-page printable PDF is available at the end.
At a glance: 14 in (35.5 cm) finished diameter · 3.75 mm (US F/5) hook · medium-weight yarn · four flower colors · eight daisies and round flowers combined, plus large and small posies · beginner-friendly assembly.
Materials for the crochet flower wreath
- Medium-weight acrylic yarn in two colors for wrapping the wreath, four flower colors, and green for the leaves. The sample uses Wildflower (A), Turqua (B), Cornmeal (C), Light Raspberry (D), Coral (E), Soft White (F), and Green Tones (G).
- 3.75 mm (US F/5) crochet hook and a 14 in (35.5 cm) straw or foam wreath form.
- Assorted 12 mm and 19 mm buttons, white craft glue, straight pins, yarn needle and scissors.
Gauge: not critical for this decorative project. Keep your stitches relaxed enough to shape the petals, and leave sewing tails on the pieces that need attaching.
US crochet abbreviations
ch = chain; sc = single crochet; hdc = half double crochet; dc = double crochet; tr = treble crochet; sl st = slip stitch; st = stitch. An asterisk marks the start of a repeated sequence; stitches in parentheses are worked into the same stitch.
Step 1: Wrap the wreath form
Cover about 2½ in (6.5 cm) of the form with color A, winding the yarn close together so the base cannot be seen. Glue the yarn ends in place. Wrap the next 2½ in with color B, and continue alternating A and B until the form is covered. Secure the last end neatly on the back.
Step 2: Crochet the coiled round flowers
Make one round flower in each of C, D, E and F. For each flower, ch 18. Beginning in the second chain from the hook, work 1 sc; then work 3 sc in each of the next 4 chains, 3 hdc in each of the next 4, 3 dc in each of the next 4, and 3 tr in each of the final 4. Fasten off with a long tail.
Coil the strip loosely with its smaller sc end at the center. Stitch through the lower edges of the layers to hold the flower together. Try not to flatten the petal edge as you sew.
Step 3: Make layered daisies
Make one daisy in each flower color. Each daisy has a larger eight-petal piece and a smaller six-petal piece.
- Outer petals: Ch 2, work 8 sc in the second chain and join. For each of the 8 petals, ch 6; working back down that chain, make sc, sc, hdc, dc, dc, then sc in the next stitch of the center round. Join and leave a long sewing tail.
- Inner petals: Ch 2, work 6 sc in the second chain and join. For each of the 6 petals, ch 4; work sc, hdc and dc back down the chain, then sc in the next center stitch. Join and leave a long tail.
- Place the smaller piece over the larger one and sew through their centers. Add a button when finishing the flowers.
Step 4: Crochet the large and small posies
Make one large and one small posy in each of C, D, E and F. Both sizes begin with ch 2 and 6 sc in the second chain, joined into a small circle.
Large posy: In the first base stitch work (ch 4, tr, ch 4, sc). In each of the other five base stitches work (sc, ch 4, tr, ch 4, sc). Join; you will have six petals. Fasten off with a long tail.
Small posy: Ch 2, then work (hdc, ch 2, sc) in the same base stitch. In each of the next five base stitches work (sc, ch 2, hdc, ch 2, sc). Join and leave a sewing tail. Layer each small posy on its matching large one and sew a button in the center.
Step 5: Add green crochet leaves
Make one or two leaves per flower with green yarn. Ch 7. From the second chain work sc, sc, hdc, dc, hdc, then 3 sc in the end chain. Turn around the foundation chain and work back along the opposite side: hdc, dc, hdc, sc, sc. Join to the first sc with a sl st and leave a long tail. Sew the leaves to the backs of the flowers so their tips peek out between the petals.
Step 6: Arrange the flowers and make a hanger
Sew buttons to the centers of the daisies and coiled flowers. Pin the flowers temporarily across roughly the lower third of the wrapped form, shifting colors and heights until the arrangement feels balanced. Set one flower aside for the hanger. Sew the remaining flowers securely onto the wreath and remove every temporary pin.
Hold one strand each of colors C and E together and ch 80. Join to the first chain to form a loop. Fold it around the top of the wreath and pull one folded end through the other to anchor it. Sew the reserved flower over the front of the hanger. Weave in loose ends and check that the wreath hangs evenly.
