Giraffe Crochet Lovey with a Granny-Square Blanket
· admin
This giraffe crochet lovey has a soft square blanket with a mustard center and pale border. A long-muzzled giraffe head sits at its center, with two small arms resting against the fabric. Different hook sizes keep the blanket relaxed and the stuffed features firmer. The design is the opening Giraffe Lovey section of the supplied collection.

Materials and gauge
Super bulky mustard, birch and caramel chenille yarn, 8 mm and 6.5 mm hooks, black and white worsted yarn for embroidery, filling, needle and scissors. The source lists one skein of each main color.
Start with the blanket
Use the 8 mm hook and mustard yarn. Leave a starting tail about sixteen inches long for attaching the head later. Make a magic ring, chain 3 as the first dc and complete four groups of three dc separated by chain-two corners. Join to the starting chain. The source includes chains in some early totals, so count four corners and four dc groups rather than expecting twenty solid stitches.
Turn for the following granny rounds. In each corner, work (3 dc, chain 2, 3 dc), and place three dc in each available side gap. Continue through round 9 in mustard, then rounds 10–11 in birch. Change colors on the closing slip stitch for a tidy transition.
Round 12 is birch sc around with three sc in each corner. Change back to mustard for round 13, placing three sc in the middle corner stitch. Round 14 is a loose slip-stitch finish without turning. Keep that last round relaxed so it does not curl the blanket edge.

Shape the muzzle and head
With caramel and the 6.5 mm hook, begin with 8 sc, increase to 16 and then 24. Work two plain rounds at 24, then decrease to 18. Change to mustard. The next round is 4 sc, ten increases and 4 sc, giving 28. Increase the following round to 35 using the offset sequence pictured in the source; work rounds 9–14 at 35.
The final shaping rounds reduce the head through the source’s irregular counts before closing. Thirty-five does not divide evenly into four-stitch decrease groups, so retain the ending stitches shown on page 5 rather than silently treating the repeat as evenly divisible. Stuff gradually, preserving the projecting brown muzzle.
Make the giraffe details
Each horn knob begins with 6 sc and has two plain rounds before changing from caramel to mustard. Reduce to 4 stitches, then work two plain rounds. Make two. The ears grow through 6, 6, 12, 12, 18 and 18 before tapering toward the base. Match both ear outlines before attaching them.
For each arm, begin in caramel with 6 sc, then 12 and a plain round. Reduce to 10, change to mustard, work two plain rounds and taper to the source’s seven-stitch tube. Continue through arm round 14. Half-fill the lower arm so it stays soft where it meets the blanket.
Embroider and assemble
The source shows embroidered black eyes with five stitches between them. Use the close-up diagrams on pages 7–8 for their vertical placement and the small white highlights. Embroider the eyebrows lightly so they do not disappear into the chenille. Add the short mane with chain-five loops anchored down the back of the head.
Fold the blanket to locate its exact center. Use the long starting tail to sew the underside of the head to the first granny round, passing around the attachment several times. Sew the arms where the head and blanket meet, placing them symmetrically. Check the attachment from the back as well as the front.

Keep the blanket and features balanced
Overfilling the head can make it disproportionately heavy for the square. Add enough filling to support the muzzle, then compare it with the relaxed blanket before closing. Inspect embroidery and seams before supervised handling, and keep stuffed loveys out of an unattended infant sleep space.
Frequently asked questions
Are the blanket rounds turned?
Yes. The granny section turns between rounds; the final slip-stitch edging does not.
Why leave a long starting tail?
It becomes the center attachment yarn for sewing the giraffe head to the blanket.
Does this cover every animal in the file?
No. It covers the opening giraffe blanket. Horse, puffin and other designs remain in the collection.
