Cinnamon Swirl Crochet Hat and Scarf Set Pattern
· admin
The Cinnamon Swirl crochet hat and scarf set combines raised cable columns with a soft worsted-weight fabric. The scarf is worked flat in two alternating rows; the hat uses matching cables in joined rounds and a shaped crown. Read the cable definitions before starting, because the wider four-stitch crossing uses extended post stitches rather than ordinary dc.

Project at a glance
| Detail | Project information |
|---|---|
| Skill level | Intermediate cable crochet |
| Finished size | Scarf 27 × 200 cm; hat approximately 25 × 25 cm |
| Technique | Crochet; US stitch terms in this article unless a source image is labeled otherwise |
| Construction | Follow the project stages below |
Materials and tools
- 6 × 100 g balls Paintbox Yarns Wool Blend Worsted in the source Jewel color
- 5 mm crochet hook, yarn needle and stitch markers
- Pom-pom supplies for the optional hat topper
Stitches and pattern notes
ch = chain; sl st = slip stitch; sc = single crochet; hdc = half double crochet; dc = double crochet; tr = treble crochet; st = stitch; sp = space; RS/WS = right/wrong side. A bracket followed by × 3 means repeat the entire bracket three times.
Gauge: 14 stitches and 10 rows per 10 cm in the cable pattern. FPdc/BPdc means front/back-post double crochet. Work around the post of the stitch below, not into its top loops. Ch 2 does not count as a stitch. Hdc2tog and FPdc2tog combine two stitches into one.
Learn the two cable crossings
- C2F: skip one stitch, FPdc around the next stitch, then cross in front and FPdc around the skipped stitch. Two stitches are consumed and two are made.
- C4F: skip two stitches, work one front-post extended dc around each of the next two stitches, then cross in front and work one front-post extended dc around each skipped stitch.
- Front-post extended dc: yarn over, insert around the post and draw up a loop; yarn over and draw through one loop, then complete the stitch by drawing through two loops twice.

Scarf: establish the 40-stitch width
| Step | Instructions | Checkpoint |
|---|---|---|
| Foundation | Chain 42. Hdc in the third chain and each chain across; turn. | 40 stitches |
| RS cable row | Ch 2; 4 hdc, C2F, 2 hdc, [C4F, 2 hdc, C2F, 2 hdc] × 3, then 2 hdc; turn. | 40 stitches |
| WS return row | Ch 2; 2 hdc, [2 hdc, 2 BPdc, 2 hdc, 4 BPdc] × 3, then 2 hdc, 2 BPdc, 4 hdc; turn. | 40 stitches |
| Length | Repeat the RS and WS rows to 200 cm, finishing after a WS row. | Measure relaxed fabric |
The four hdc at one edge and two at the other are intentional: the return row reverses that arrangement. Mark each cable column while learning the sequence, and check that every crossing still contains the same number of posts.
Hat: ribbed band and cable body
Chain 70 and join without twisting. Ch 2 and work 70 hdc for the setup round; join. Work three rib rounds alternating FPdc and BPdc. Establish the cable repeat with [2 hdc, C4F, 2 hdc, C2F] seven times. On the next round, work [2 hdc, 4 FPdc, 2 hdc, 2 FPdc] seven times. Continue those two body rounds until the hat measures 21 cm, ending with the plain post-stitch round.
Shape the crown
| Step | Instructions | Checkpoint |
|---|---|---|
| Crown 1 | [Hdc2tog, C4F, hdc2tog, C2F] × 7. | 56 |
| Crown 2 | [Hdc, FPdc2tog twice, hdc, 2 FPdc] × 7. | 42 |
| Crown 3 | [Hdc, C2F] × 14. | 42 |
| Crown 4 | [Hdc, FPdc2tog] × 14. | 28 |
| Crown 5 | Hdc2tog × 14; cut a sewing tail. | 14 |
Thread the tail through the last 14 stitches and draw the crown closed. Secure the yarn, weave in the ends and attach a pom-pom if desired. Check the closure from the inside so there is no loose opening beneath the topper.

Tips for a clean finish
- Swatch the actual cable pattern; plain hdc gauge cannot predict the width of raised cables.
- Place a marker at the first stitch of every hat round.
- Block gently according to the yarn label and avoid pressing down the cable relief.
Frequently asked questions
Can I make only the scarf?
Yes. The scarf is a complete flat project and does not depend on making the matching hat.
Why use extended stitches in C4F?
The added height helps the stitches cross two positions without pulling the fabric as tightly as ordinary post dc.
