Crochet Octopus Comforter with Eight Curly Legs

· admin

Colorful crochet octopus comforters with curled legs

This crochet octopus comforter combines a rounded head, narrow lower body and eight curly legs worked directly from the bottom rim. A separate round disc closes the stuffed body. The reference uses bright cotton yarn and crocheted white eyes with embroidered pupils. Follow the body counts before adding the curls so they can be spaced evenly.

Materials, Gauge and Size

DK cotton such as Rico Essential DK Cotton, a 3 mm / US D hook, marker, tapestry needle, stuffing and scraps of black and white yarn. The source sample is about 5–6 in; it gives no fixed gauge or measured total yardage. Work dense sc fabric so the filling stays inside. A different yarn changes the head size and the length of the curls. This is a toy project, not an age-sized garment.

Stitches and Pattern Notes

US crochet terms: ch = chain; sc = single crochet; hdc = half double crochet; dc = double crochet; tr = treble crochet; sl st = slip stitch; st = stitch; sp = space; BLO = back loop only; inc = 2 stitches in one stitch. Sc2tog, hdc2tog and dc2tog combine two neighboring stitches into one. A number before a stitch tells you how many consecutive stitches to work. Parentheses followed by a repeat number describe one complete group repeated that many times.

Step 2: Add Eight Curly Legs

Keep working in a spiral without joining the body rounds. After Round 26, mark eight groups of three around the 24-stitch rim. Work one sc in the first rim stitch. Ch 45 and work 3 sc in the second chain and each of the remaining 43 chains: 132 sc along the chain, which makes it curl. Return to the rim and sc into the next three body stitches. Repeat the curl-and-anchor sequence.

Make eight curls in total. After the eighth curl, only the final two unworked rim stitches remain; sc into them and join to the first sc instead of making an extra stitch into it. This spells out the wraparound anchor at the end of the source round. Check eight curls, one starting per three-position group, before fastening off with a long sewing tail.

Step 3: Make the Bottom Disc

With the body color, make a magic ring with 6 sc. Round 2: inc in every stitch (12). Round 3: (inc, sc) six times (18). Round 4: (inc, 2 sc) six times (24). Fasten off. The 24-stitch disc matches the body rim beneath the eight curls.

Do not stuff the long chain legs. Stuff the head/body before attaching the bottom, keeping the filling inside the dense fabric. Pin the disc under the rim and sew stitch by stitch around it, keeping each curl outside the seam.

Step 4: Crochet and Embroider the Eyes

Make two white eyes. Round 1: 6 sc in a magic ring. Round 2: inc around (12). For the source’s shaped final section, work 2 sc in each of the next three stitches, sc in the next stitch, then sl st in the following stitch and fasten off. This is a partial shaping section, not a full third round; the remaining edge stays unworked.

Embroider a black pupil in the center of each white eye. Pin both eyes to the face and check their spacing against the source photograph before sewing. Embroider a small black mouth underneath. Keep the embroidery tails buried and secured inside the body.

Step 5: Check and Finish

Inspect the full bottom seam and every eye attachment, then weave in all remaining tails. The curls naturally twist because each foundation chain carries three sc. Arrange them with your fingers rather than pulling hard on them. The original reference has two photographs; a labelled detail crop supplies the third view in this article.

If you change the chain length, that is a design variation and changes the finished legs. Make one trial curl in your chosen yarn before modifying all eight. Record the hook and yarn used so any matching toy can be made with the same fabric.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are the legs sewn on separately? No. They grow from the 24-position body rim.

Why does each leg curl? Three sc are worked into every chain, creating more fabric than a straight chain can hold flat.

Is the last eye section a full round? No. The source ends it after three increases, one sc and a joining slip stitch.
