Boho Rainbow Baby Blanket with mixed stitch rows

The boho rainbow crochet baby blanket combines four colors with a five-row texture cycle. Because the color cycle and stitch cycle have different lengths, their pairing shifts until both reset after twenty rows. Moss stitch, puffs, alternating sc and dc, and paired hdc create the mixed texture in the pastel reference sample.

Materials, Gauge and Size

Medium / category 4 yarn in Off-White (OW), Baby Pink (BP), White (W) and Baby Rainbow (BR), one source-listed skein of each. The file names Caron One Pound and Red Heart Super Saver, whose skein sizes differ; compare yardage when substituting. Use a 5 mm / US H-8 hook, needle and scissors. Source size is about 36 × 40 in, with ten pattern rows per 4 in. Make a washed swatch in the actual mixed stitches before choosing your final width.

Stitches and Pattern Notes

US crochet terms: ch = chain; sc = single crochet; hdc = half double crochet; dc = double crochet; tr = treble crochet; sl st = slip stitch; st = stitch; sp = space; BLO = back loop only; inc = 2 stitches in one stitch. Sc2tog, hdc2tog and dc2tog combine two neighboring stitches into one. A number before a stitch tells you how many consecutive stitches to work. Parentheses followed by a repeat number describe one complete group repeated that many times.

Step 1: Work the Foundation and Moss Rows

Ch 124 with OW, or an even number for a measured width variation. Row 1: sc in the fourth chain, then repeat (ch 1, skip one chain, sc in next chain) to the end. Finish with sc in the last chain, change to BP on its final pull-through, ch 2 and turn.

Row 2: skip the first sc, then sc into the next chain space; repeat (ch 1, skip the next sc, sc in the next chain space) across. Work the final sc in the edge chain space after the last sc, change to W, ch 2 and turn. These chain spaces, including the end space, are important: missing the last one makes the blanket narrower.

Step 2: Add the Other Three Textures

Puff row: skip the first sc, work a puff into each chain space with ch 1 between puffs, and finish with a puff in the end chain space. For each puff, work four yarn-over/draw-up actions in the same space, then pull through all nine loops. Change color on the closing pull-through, ch 2 and turn.

Alternating row: sc in the top of the first puff, dc in the following chain space, and repeat that pair across. Finish with dc in the end chain space. Change color, ch 2 and turn.

Paired-hdc row: 2 hdc in the first sc, skip the next dc and repeat (2 hdc in next sc, skip next dc) across, ending with the final two-hdc pair in the last sc. Change color, ch 2 and turn. The next moss row works sc into the spaces between these hdc pairs, with ch 1 between them, and ends with sc in the edge chain space.

Step 4: Repeat Without Restarting the Foundation

Work the twenty-row chart five times in total for the source’s approximately 100-row body, or stop at your measured length. On later cycles, Row 1 means a normal moss row into the preceding hdc-pair spaces, not a new chain foundation. The source permits one final OW moss row so the first and last textures match.

Leave color-change tails long enough to weave securely. Carrying tails under a few stitches can reduce finishing, but do not pull them tight across the open fabric. Count the pattern groups periodically and compare both edges rather than relying on row length held in the air.

Step 5: Add the Two-Round Border

With W, join in a corner and work a round of sc: one into each top and bottom stitch position, evenly spaced stitches along the row ends and three sc in each corner. Join to the first sc. The source suggests roughly one or two sc per row end, adjusted to keep the border flat.

For the second round, dc in each sc and work three dc at each corner, then join and fasten off. If the border cups, check for too few side stitches or tight tension; if it ripples, check for excess stitches. Weave in all remaining ends and follow the yarn label’s washing directions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why are there twenty rows in the chart? The four-color order and five-row stitch order realign after twenty rows.

Do I chain 124 at the start of every repeat? No. The foundation is made once. Later cycles begin with a moss row into the existing fabric.

Can I change the colors? Yes. Keep their four-color order consistent if you want the same shifting texture-and-color relationship.
