Vintage Vibes Baby Beanie Crochet Pattern: Diamond Flower Band
· admin
The Vintage Vibes baby beanie by Farrah Jane Tate of The Crochet Fix pairs a smooth crown with a diamond-flower band. This tutorial selects the Sweet and Simple, Option A version: seven motifs with three double crochets between them in the center motif round. Follow this one option consistently rather than mixing counts from the eight-motif version.

Materials and Gauge
- Less than 50 g / 1.8 oz DK / category 3 yarn with clear stitch definition.
- 4 mm crochet hook, or size needed to match the crown gauge.
- Tapestry needle, scissors and a stitch marker.
The source sample is about 37 cm / 14.5 in around the relaxed brim and 13 cm / 5 in deep, approximately its 0–3 month size. The first three rounds should form a circle about 7 cm / 2.75 in across and 3.5 cm / 1.4 in deep. Measure the baby’s head and check stretch; an age label alone cannot guarantee fit.
US Terms and Standing Stitches
US terms: ch = chain; sc = single crochet; hdc = half double crochet; dc = double crochet; sl st = slip stitch; st(s) = stitch(es); sp = space; BLO = back loop only; inc = 2 stitches in one stitch. A decrease combines two stitches into one. Use a marker where a round begins. Unless specifically stated, a turning ch 1 adds height and is not a stitch.
The source uses a standing stitch at the beginning of each new round. For a dc-height start, ch 1 and sc in the joining stitch; ch 1, then sc into the front loop of the sc just made. These two stacked sc count as one dc position. For the hdc-height start, work the second sc through both loops. The designer also permits ch 3 instead of the dc standing stitch and ch 2 instead of the hdc standing stitch; count that chain start as the first stitch and use the same choice consistently. Do not work into the joining slip stitch.
Step 1: Shape the Crown
| Round | Instructions | Count |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Make a magic ring, ch 2 without counting it, and work 11 dc. Close the ring and join to the first dc. | 11 |
| 2 | Work 2 dc in each stitch, counting the standing start as the first dc. | 22 |
| 3 | Repeat (dc, 2 dc in next st) eleven times. | 33 |
| 4 | Repeat (dc in next 2 sts, 2 dc in next st) eleven times. | 44 |
| 5 | Repeat (dc in next 3 sts, 2 dc in next st) ten times; dc in next 2 sts, 2 dc in each of the last 2 sts. | 56 |
| 6–7 | Dc in every stitch. | 56 each |
| 8 | Hdc in every stitch. | 56 |
Use the appropriate standing start within the first stitch of every round, replacing the first dc or hdc named in the table. Round 5 adds twelve stitches: ten regular increases and two final increases. That extra increase prepares the circumference for seven repeats of eight positions.
Step 2: Open the Diamond Flowers
Round 9A: dc-height start, 3 dc, ch 3 and skip 1 stitch. Repeat (7 dc, ch 3, skip 1 stitch) six times, then 3 dc. Join. The round contains 49 dc and seven ch-3 spaces. The seven dc that straddle the join form one continuous section; do not add an eighth space at the seam.

Step 3: Work the Center of the Motif
Round 10A: dc-height start, then dc in the next stitch. Ch 3, skip the next two dc and the first chain of the following ch-3 space, and sl st into its middle chain. Ch 3, skip its final chain and the next two dc. Repeat this sequence six times: 3 dc, ch 3, skip two dc and the first chain of the next space, sl st into its middle chain, ch 3, skip its final chain and the next two dc. Finish with one dc in the last stitch and join. There are 21 dc and seven pairs of chain arches anchored by a central slip stitch.
Step 4: Restore the Band Width
Round 11A: dc-height start and dc in the next dc. Work dc in each of the next two chains, ch 1, and skip the next chain, central slip stitch and following chain. Work dc in each of the next two chains. Repeat (dc in next 3 dc, dc in next 2 chains, ch 1, skip chain/sl st/chain, dc in next 2 chains) six times. Dc in the final dc and join. Count 49 dc and seven ch-1 spaces.
Round 12A: hdc-height start, hdc in the next 3 dc and hdc over the next ch-1 space. Repeat (hdc in next 7 dc, hdc over next ch-1 space) six times; hdc in the final 3 dc and join. The edge returns to 56 hdc. Optional: work a loose slip-stitch finishing round without changing the circumference, then fasten off.

Finishing and Fit
Weave in all ends and wash according to the yarn label. Shape gently and measure the relaxed brim again. This version leaves off the source’s optional earflaps, ties and pompoms. The file contains further motif and preemie variations, but their counts should be followed as separate patterns rather than substituted halfway through this version.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does this version have seven or eight flowers?
Seven. It follows the A instructions, with 49 dc and seven chain spaces in the outer motif rounds.
Can I use a chain start instead of stacked stitches?
The designer permits ch 3 for the dc-height start and ch 2 for the hdc-height start. Count it as the first stitch and do not add another stitch in the same position unless an increase is required.
Why is the brim back to 56 stitches?
The last round works one hdc in each of 49 dc and one over each of seven chain spaces: 49 + 7 = 56.
