Crochet Trailing Leaf Hanging Plant with a Mini Pot

· admin

This crochet trailing leaf hanging plant creates a soft cascade of leaves around a small pot. This design uses linked leaf units rather than wired individual stems. The pot alternates single and double crochet bands, while a separate stuffed soil insert provides a surface for sewing the leaf strands in place. Make the pot first so you can judge how long the strands should be.

Crochet Trailing Leaf Hanging Plant Materials

  • Super-fine yarn in green, beige and brown; the source lists 50 g / 1.8 oz without individual color quantities.
  • A 2.5–3 mm crochet hook.
  • A stitch marker, yarn needle, scissors and filling.

Before you begin

Use US crochet terms: ch = chain, sl st = slip stitch, sc = single crochet, hdc = half double crochet and dc = double crochet. Inc means two sc in one stitch, dec means sc2tog and BLO means back loop only. For joined pot rounds, the source recommends joining to the first stitch, beginning sc rounds with ch 1 and dc rounds with ch 2. Beginning chains do not add to the listed stitch counts.

Crochet the mini pot

Round / rowInstructionsCount
1Make a magic ring, ch 1 and work 8 sc.8
2Increase in every stitch.16
3Repeat (1 sc, inc) eight times.24
4Repeat (2 sc, inc) eight times.32
5Repeat (3 sc, inc) eight times.40
61 sc in every stitch through the back loops only.40
71 dc in every stitch.40
81 sc in every stitch.40
91 dc in every stitch.40
10–111 sc in every stitch for two rounds.40

Make three hanging cords of ch 30 and fasten them around the rim with approximately 12–13 stitches between the attachment points. Gather their upper ends to form the hanger.

Crochet the soil insert

Make a linked leaf strand

  1. Ch 4 and join into a small ring.
  2. Ch 3, then work (1 dc, ch 3), (1 hdc, ch 3), (1 dc, ch 3), (1 dc, ch 3), (1 hdc, ch 3) and (1 dc, ch 3) into the ring. This gives the seven chain spaces used for the edging.
  3. In each of the first three spaces, work 3 sc and a slip stitch. In the fourth space, work 1 sc, a picot, 1 sc and a slip stitch. In each of the remaining three spaces, work 3 sc and a slip stitch.
  4. For the picot in this adaptation, ch 3 and slip stitch into the first of those chains.
  5. After finishing the leaf, ch 10. Slip stitch into the fourth chain from the hook to form the next small ring, leaving the other chains as a connector. Repeat the leaf construction.
  6. Continue until the strand has the length you want. Leave a sewing tail at the end.

Attach the strands and finish

Sew the leaf strands to the soil insert, spreading them around the surface so they drape over different parts of the pot. Put the soil inside the pot and arrange the strands over the rim. Make sure the three hanging cords are not trapped under the leaves.

The source does not specify a fixed strand count or finished pot dimensions. Use the pot you have made as the guide, and check the drape before adding more strands.

Questions before you finish

Does this trailing plant need wire?

Wire is not listed for this design. The leaves are linked with chains and sewn to the soil insert.

Can I vary the length of the strands?

Yes. Repeat the linked-leaf unit until you reach the desired drape. Keep enough space around the rim for the three hanging cords.
