Crochet Coaster Holder with a Front Opening and Six Discs
· admin
A crochet coaster holder keeps a matching set together while leaving a small opening at the front to lift each disc out. The source pairs four-round double-crochet coasters with a shallow single-crochet container. Its photograph shows multicolored discs inside a pale holder. This guide explains the shared circular base, the five-position opening and the source’s unusual rule that beginning chains count as stitches.

Choose the yarn and hook
The original uses medium-weight cotton and a US H hook, commonly 5 mm, plus a tapestry needle. It suggests six coasters but allows a different set size. There is no verified finished diameter or gauge in the two-page file, so make a coaster first and use it to judge the holder’s fit.
Use the same yarn thickness for both pieces. A soft, loosely worked holder can collapse even when its base has the correct stitch count. A firmer cotton fabric generally holds the opening more clearly. Check the actual stack height before deciding whether the source wall height suits the number of coasters you make.
Count the beginning chains consistently
The source says all beginning chain stitches count as the first stitch. In its double-crochet rounds, ch 2 occupies one counted position. Do not add another dc into that same position unless the round explicitly increases there. A marker in the chain top makes the closing slip stitch easier to place.
The same convention affects the opening row of the sidewall: the ch 1 and the next 54 sc represent 55 occupied positions. With a 60-position base, that leaves five open positions. Counting only the 54 worked sc and then trying to leave five would account for only 59 base positions.

Make the matching discs
- Begin with a small chain ring. The first joined double-crochet round has twelve counted stitches.
- Increase around the circle to 24 on the second round, 36 on the third and 48 on the fourth.
- Keep the increases evenly distributed and include the counted beginning chain in the totals.
- Fasten off, secure the tails and check that the disc lies flat. Make six, or the number you want to store.
A coaster that waves significantly at this stage should be checked before you copy it. The holder cannot correct a disc with extra increases or a very loose join. Stack the completed discs together and compare their diameters before beginning the container.
Build the holder and its opening
Work the same 12, 24, 36 and 48 progression for the holder’s base. Add the source’s single-crochet increase round to reach 60 counted positions. For the first sidewall pass, work in back loops to create the turn from base to wall, leaving the five-position front opening.
The source then changes to turned single-crochet rows. Work back and forth around the occupied section, rather than closing the front gap into a complete tube. Its rows seven through thirteen form the wall. Keep the row ends even so both sides of the opening reach the same height.
The final slip-stitch edging travels around the wall perimeter and across the five exposed positions at the base of the opening. It is described as optional if the holder is already firm enough. Work this border loosely enough that it supports the edge without shrinking the opening.
Check the finished set
Weave the ends into the thicker wall and base sections. Slide the discs into the holder and remove them one at a time through the front. If the stack catches, compare the actual diameter and edging tension before adding arbitrary stitches. The PDF’s counted-chain convention is essential to its written counts; keep the original beside you when interpreting its abbreviated rows.
The holder is intended for ordinary tabletop storage. Choose a washable cotton and follow its care label. Let every disc dry completely before stacking it inside the container.

Frequently asked questions
How many coasters does the source suggest?
Six, although you can make a different number and check the resulting stack height.
Why are only 54 sc written on the first wall row?
The source also counts its beginning ch 1, giving 55 occupied positions and leaving five of the 60 base positions open.
Is there a fixed finished size?
The source supplies no reliable diameter or gauge. Make a sample disc and check the actual holder fit.
