Ribbed Bunny Baby Booties with Tall Crochet Ears

· admin

Ribbed Bunny Baby Booties original crochet project

These ribbed bunny baby booties use a fitted cotton shoe, a gathered toe section and tall ears attached against a post-stitch cuff. They are a different source design from the earlier embroidered Hoppy slippers. This guide follows the nine-centimeter foot-size column and keeps its shaping separate from the three larger source sizes.

Skill level Intermediate
Size Selected source foot length approximately 9 cm / 0–3 months.
Hook 2–2.5 mm, adjusted to gauge.
Source Bunny Booties Pattern, supplied Bunny Slippers.pdf; 9 cm size selected.

Materials and gauge

Mercerized sport cotton, about one 50 g hank for source 9–10 cm sizes; 2–2.5 mm hook, markers, needle and scissors. Source yarn: Vita Cotton Lily, 125 m / 50 g. Gauge: 26 dc × 13 rows per 10 cm. The source also lists 55 cm cords.

Make the selected sole

Use US terms. Chain 19 and work around the foundation with the starting chain counted as directed. The first oval round has forty stitches. The second mixes sc, hdc and dc with increases at both ends, reaching fifty. Round 3 is the dc increase round and finishes at sixty-two.

Mark the beginning of each round. The source offers foundations 22, 25 and 28 for larger feet, but their toe joins and upper counts differ as well. Measure the completed small sole before continuing; a cotton substitution can produce a noticeably longer shoe at the same stitch count.

Build the sidepiece

The first side round works sc around the dc posts at the sole edge rather than through normal stitch tops. Keep sixty-two positions. Work one dc round and two sc rounds at the same count, then fasten off. The source allows additional sc rounds for a higher sidepiece; treat that as a fit adjustment and repeat it on both shoes.

Shape the toe in short rows

For the nine-centimeter version, join at the sixteenth stitch from the round beginning. The first turned toe row begins with chain 2 and dc, then fifteen dc2tog. The next row narrows that section with seven dc2tog. The final short row uses the source’s large dc7tog closure to gather the toe top.

A multi-dc decrease leaves the final loop of each incomplete dc on the hook, then closes the group together. Keep those loops at equal height. Use the original pages 5 and 7 for the pickup points across the horizontal toe stitches; the cuff is not simply another sixty-two-stitch round.

Work the ribbed upper

Pick up across the toe ends and the remaining shoe opening for forty-two stitches in the smallest version. The next three rounds alternate back-post and front-post dc. This produces the deep ribbed ankle section and gives stable posts for the ear attachments.

Do not replace front-post dc with front-loop dc: one wraps around a post, while the other uses only a top loop. Check the rib alignment at the join so neighboring ridges continue upward rather than shifting a stitch on each round.

Make four ears

Each ear begins with 6 sc. Add two stitches per round until reaching twenty at round 8. Rounds 9–18 stay at twenty. Flatten the opening and close across it with nine sc as pictured, then fold the base again to create its crease. Leave a sewing tail. Make four ears for the pair.

Sew two onto each upper in the positions marked in the source photographs. Add the extra attachment from the back of each ear to the nearby front- and back-post ridges so the tall ears do not simply fall forward.

Finish the pair

The source threads cords around the last upper round. Those are optional embellishments; the bootie and ear structure are complete without them. If using ties, keep handling supervised and check their length and attachment. Compare sole size, toe height and cuff width across the finished pair before weaving the last tails.

Frequently asked questions

How many ears are made?

Four, with two attached to each bootie.

What supports the tall ears?

The base is folded and sewn, then the back of each ear is anchored to the post-stitch cuff.

Which size is explained here?

The smallest nine-centimeter foot-length column. The larger sizes use different foundations and toe counts.
