Crochet Bonsai Tree Pattern with a Sculpted Trunk and Oval Leaves

· admin

This crochet bonsai tree pattern creates a small sculptural plant with several separate components. The rectangular pot supports a padded soil insert and a curved trunk, while flat oval leaves sit on branches of matching sizes. Taller stitches and carefully moved round markers create the shape of the trunk. The original project is marked intermediate and measures approximately 22 cm tall by 25 cm wide with the recommended yarn and hook.

Materials for the Crochet Bonsai Tree Pattern

  • A 4 mm crochet hook and light-worsted / DK yarn.
  • Source yarn amounts: light green 160 m, dark green 72 m, light brown 80 m, dark brown 80 m and light gray 10 m.
  • A tapestry needle, fiberfill and a stitch marker.
  • Optional pins to test branch positions before sewing.

Before you begin

Use US terminology and work in spirals unless stated otherwise. Sc, hdc and dc mean single, half double and double crochet. Inc1sc means 2 sc in one stitch; inc2sc means 3 sc in one stitch. Sc2tog/sc3tog reduce two/three stitches to one, and dc2tog reduces two dc to one. The numbers below are source step numbers: some steps are stuffing, marker moves or several rounds, so do not treat every numbered step as one round.

Please note, these abbreviations look very alike but are slightly different: inc1sc = increase 1 = crochet 2 in next stitch inc2sc = increase 2 = crochet 3 in next stitch

35. Crochet 1slst and fasten off.

36. Get a long strand of dark brown yarn and pull the yarn with your sewing needle or crochet hook through the soil, from top to bottom and back. Tighten the yarn, this way little dents will occur. Make two flat knots on top of each other to secure the yarn. Repeat this 16 times, or as much as you like. This will give the soil some strenght and a more natural look.

37. Place the soil in the flowerpot and sew it in place.

Position and sew the foliage

the tree together: Some things to keep in mind: Divide the tree in three parts. – Place the heaviest leaves (A) and their branches mostly on the bottom third of the tree, but maybe also one in the middle (depending on how many leaves you want to add yourself). – Place the lightest leaves (C) and their branches on the top third of the tree. – Place the medium weight leaves (B) and their branches on the middle part and bottom third of the tree. …this way the tree will keep its balance and will be able to stand on its own in the end. If you place leaves on the end of the tree that are too heavy, it will tip over. If you want, use some small pins or small skewer sticks to try out some different positions with leaves on the tree trunk. You can adjust them until you are happy with the final composition. Also: When finally sewing all branches and leaves onto the tree, make sure all leaves are pointing in the same direction. First, sew all branches onto the three, one by one: And then, sew the matching leaves (type A leaves for type A branches, etc) onto the branches. Keep the edge of the leaf close to the tree itself. Repeat until all branches and leaves are sewn onto the tree.

Questions before you finish

Should I stuff the leaves?

No. The leaves and branches are left unstuffed. Flatten each leaf and sew its remaining opening closed.

How do I keep the bonsai balanced?

Try the positions before sewing. The source places the heavier A leaves mainly on the lower third, the light C leaves near the top and the medium B leaves in the middle and lower areas.
